Taken from official website: "Rising from the ashes of the seminal rock group The Veldt (Chapel Hill / Raleigh, N.C.) Danny and twin brother Daniel Chavis formed Apollo Heights in New York City's Lower East Side in 2002. With nothing more than couple of guitars and a drum machine, they took their sonic alchemy assault to New York's nightclub scene."
"Far from predictable, Apollo Heights flips hip hop programming on its head to make use of the guitar driven feed-back, adding a down south flavor all its own. Influences range from Curtis Mayfield to The Cocteau Twins, Jimi Hendrix to Massive Attack, and pretty much all in between."
Babble & Beat -
I love, love, love the term you are using, "Broasis!" How exactly did you come to use that term? I mean, what was going on or being discussed when the term was first spoken by you guys?
Daniel - Well, my brother and I don't always see eye to eye on everything and sometimes it even spills out onto the stage. So, people started saying our relationship was like Oasis' kinda. Didn't notice it really... just thought he was often times being a knob head.
Babble & Beat - You worked with the magnificent Robin Guthrie (of Cocteau Twins) on this release. What did you learn from him?
Daniel - Well, Robin was very protective of my brother and me. He had a really punk rock ethic when it came to music and the attitude. It began on the September sound sessions in London. We came away with a 'stick to your own guns' mentality.
Babble & Beat - Lady Miss Kier of Deee-Lite appeared on the song 'Winter in the Summertime'. What was it like working with her?
Daniel - She was actually a friend of Micha Gaugh's, our background vocalist / keyboardist. She was just in town from Germany and dropped in for our session. She was really open and lively. Micha is on background for that track too.
Babble & Beat - Not only have you toured with TV on the Radio but they also appear on your song, 'Disco Lights'. What do you think of the song - is it even better than you imagined it would be?
Daniel - I had no idea Dave (Sitek) would take it that direction, although during the tour their music had a significant influence on later tracks we would write.
Babble & Beat - I read somewhere that 'Disco Lights' is about an ecstasy overdose on the dance floor. I like that you are reminding people of the dangers behind the common drug. Was this penned due to a close-to-home experience?
Daniel - No, not really from experience but from incidents that were occurring around us... too bad, eh?
Babble & Beat - How exactly did Mos Def come into play on your debut album?
Daniel - The story goes... and I quote, this track was a throwaway track. I didn't think it was an Apollo track so I even destroyed the original tracks as to show you how much I didn't think it was us. Well, I sent it to my brother so he could write to it. I heard Mos got ahold of it at Green Street Studios where Public Enemy did their first LP. He got ahold of the instrumental and he spat on it. We didn't even know. The guys from Dragons of Zynth told us. We were like, yeah right. But it's just a demo.
Babble & Beat - Apollo Heights is a featured artist on an upcoming Madonna tribute, 'Through The Wilderness' (Manimal Vinyl). You chose to do her song, 'Dress You Up'. Why did you select this song?
Daniel - It was my favourite back then!
Babble & Beat - Speaking of which, your label (Manimal Vinyl Records) seems to be treating you guys well.
Daniel - Paul's a nut top geezer though!!
Babble & Beat - In what major ways is Apollo Heights different from your previous band, The Veldt?
Daniel - Not that much... we were heading in this direction had we not been held up. We were just ahead of our time.
Babble & Beat - Any plans for a major U.S. tour in support of your debut album, 'White Music for Black People'?
Daniel - We are working on it now. We are looking for a booking agent. So if anyone knows one, holla at us.
Babble & Beat - Are you already working on new music for your next release?
Daniel - Yes, it will be called 'The Killer of Sheep'.
This is where we ask personal questions for the fans. Yeah, they're often stupid questions. We like reading the answers though!
Babble & Beat - In your opinion, what are the worst and the best bands on the radio right now?
Daniel - Blink 182, California pseudo punk bands.
Babble & Beat - Who would you love to work with on your next release?
Daniel - Broken Social Scene.
Babble & Beat - Finish this sentence. David Bowie is __________.
Daniel - The current trend setter.
Babble & Beat - Have any great advice for other musicians out there?
Daniel - Don't give into commercial punk. Emo - it sucks.
Thank you so much, Daniel! Hope to see you guys on the road soon! Stacy
xoxo, Daniel.
