I remember the exact day that I heard She Wants Revenge for the first time. After the first 20 seconds of “Tear You Apart” I knew I was going to love this band. I immediately bought their cd.
I was stunned that I liked every-single-track. I honestly cannot tell you the last time that happened. I was also shocked, for some reason, when I read in the liner notes that Fred Durst had a part in releasing this cd. The following explains that and was taken from mtvnews.com:
Fred Durst Gets Revenge With New Flawless Singing
4.29.05
The Limp Bizkit frontman recently signed Los Angeles dance-rock duo She Wants Revenge to his Flawless Records imprint. Durst was turned on to the group through Ringside, another L.A. duo on his label. "[They're] another band that you're going to hear about real soon," Durst promised. "They're killer, man, you're going to bug out on 'em."
Many people describe their sound as being influenced by Joy Division. I only see a glimmer of that. If we’re talking specifically about vocals similarity, I would suggest that Justin’s voice sounds more similar to Paul Banks’ (of Interpol) versus Ian Curtis’ of Joy Division. Despite that there are times when they appear to target teenage girls as a main audience, I like them just the same.
The marriage of their lyrics & their music are a twisted, sexy, and sometimes scandalous force. I found myself a bit uncomfortable after hearing ‘Sister’ for the first time- but in a good way.
A sampling:
She smelled like 2am
took him back to her place
where all the saints adorn the walls
delivering her from grace
he knew he should leave
that this could only turn cold
she was a bad bad girl
so he told her so
No matter what kind of music you’re into, you can’t deny that She Wants Revenge offers interesting vocals and contagious beats!
Juicy Tidbits: Joaquin Phoenix (yes, him!) directed their 'Tear You Apart' video. As you'd assume, he did a fantastic job. Shirley Manson, from Garbage, stars in their upcoming 'These Things' video. She plays a dominatrix in it!
