Punk / Psychedelic / Rock

It’s 8am on Saturday morning & I’m giving a first listen to the Loco Gringos reissues (2006, Saustex). I‘m into song 4, and let me tell you, I can’t think of a better way to start out my day!

They formed in 1985 and per the liner notes, "The band started playing gigs and quickly developed their distinctive style, a wry, sexual, lurching cow-punk with underpinnings of island and Latin grooves, along with a growing family of devoted fans." Very unfortunately, they disbanded in 1990 due to the untimely death of their front man Pepe Lopez (Tom Foote).

‘Loco Gringos’ by Loco Gringos is F A B U L O U S !!! This release reeks of energy-infused rock-n-roll, lots of craziness, and humor! I love the music, the lyrics, and the vocals. Call me nuts, but at times the vocals remind me a bit of Glenn Danzig's & Ian Astbury's combined.

I honestly don’t know who to compare these guys to. I guess that’s best reason I could give to urge you to check their music out.

Highlights: ‘Texas Ranger Man’, ‘Fruit Fly’, ‘Ain’t No Corndogs’, ‘Burrito Electrico’, ‘Nuture My Pig’, ‘Kinda Strange’, and ‘Kill The Next Thief I Catch’.

Their tune ‘Ain’t No Corndogs’ is absolutely hysterical BUT at the same time is a great frickin’ song to rock out to. “Ain’t no corndogs when she’s gone, only darkness every day, there ain’t no corndogs when she’s gone…” Get it? “Sunshine” is replaced by “corndogs.” The exaggerated sadness they put into this effort is priceless.

There’s a nice bonus on this release, an untitled live song - making this cd actually 15 tracks long. Could be exciting, for those of you who were lucky enough to see them live years back, to try and recall if you’ve heard it at a show before.

‘Hug A Jug’ is really on here twice –once live and once studio it seems. One version is mistakenly (seemingly) labeled as ‘Thinkin `Bout Drinkin’. Or, perhaps, that was an alternate title at some point. Not that it matters, they are both good!

"This intimate documentary follows Glenn Tilbrook on every step of his first solo tour of America in his beloved - but not so reliable - home on wheels."
