11.30.06 3 STACKS OF HIGH SOCIETY
Reggae / Ska / Soul
Official description: "Made from solid members of Rude King and The 9 Spot comes a sweet injection of Reggae and Ska with a dash of Soul and devilishly good looks. The band formed in late March '06 and has already started tearing up the stages of Chicago!"

We really enjoyed their music clips 'Girl I'm Gonna Make You Mine' and 'My Island'. Listen to them now by visiting myspace.com/3stacksmusic. We bet they're a really fun band live!

I Was A Cub Scout make pummelling punk rock pop disc-o. it's part Minus The Bear, part "digital ash"-era Oberst, but most importantly they are a fresh take on star gazing, dreamy, Indie Electronica." - XL Recordings

11.29.06 WHITE ROSE MOVEMENT COMPETITION & NEW RELEASE
Indie / Electronica
Official message:"'Love Is A Number' is out on CD and vinyl this coming monday, only five days away!
We know some of you will have bought the limited release last year and we really appreciate it, but it's not the same release as that so you needn't fear buying the same thing. It's backed with a new song called 'Eliza Glow' that we're very pleased with and a new remix by Ben Allen that we think's great stuff, and there's a brand new video (on the cd it's good quality - you may have seen a rather pixellated version of it on our page!).
We figured we'd make it a bit more fun than the average trip to the local shop or online purchase, so we've decided to run a little competition for those of you that buy it in the first week of release (i.e December 4th-10th).
Basically, once you buy it you'll have a receipt - we'd like you to scan it / photograph it / etc. (whatever's fine as long as we can see you bought our single) and send it to us at whiterosemovement@googlemail.com.
Once you've done that you'll be in with a chance of winning:
- One of only 5 armbands like Owen and Jasper wear onstage - sewn by Jasper in his free time from a pair of Owen's trousers no less, and these are specially for this competition and won't ever appear on the merch table.
- One of only 5 WRM logo enamel badges - perfect for your blazer, bag, whatever... limited edition of only 100 from earlier in the year, again much like the armbands if you don't have one this is the only way to get one!
- One of 18 rare club promo whitelabels of LIAN, handstamped on one side and signed by all of us on the other...
- One of 10 christmas cards signed by us to you with White Rose love.
PLEASE NOTE! The conditions and so on... everyone that sends in their proof of purchase will get put in a Excel list, and this gives them a number. Prizes will be given out through the random number generator at random.org so it makes no difference when you buy it in the first week of sale as long as you buy it. Some people will win, others won't - apologies to those of you that don't, if we could afford to give something to each of you we would." - White Rose Movement

11.29.06 SILLY BUNNY
Powerpop / Down-tempo / Electronica
Partial official description: "Born in the West - cowboys and horses, migrated East - Avenue Emile Zola, Paris, then North - Haarlem, The Netherlands, then West - Wisconsin on the Great Lakes, then East - Fairfield County Connecticut, then West again .... Hate all of the technical part of making Music, but love the sounds technology can make. Love to travel, love to tour, love to meet new people, love to play live, love cool fashion, especially mod style."
Well, we first need to tell you that Robert from Silly Bunny has impeccable taste in music! Second, we love their style, their sound, and the fact that they use some vintage instruments (such as an older set of Ludwig drums).
Check out all of these great tunes: 'Monkey Grinder', 'PR Junky', 'Band Last Night', and a version of 'I Started A Joke' that they should be very proud of.

We'll see you all around very soon, if not in 2006 then in 2007 and we're looking forward to playing more new material for everyone. Keep safe!"

Official message: "After years of soul searching, meditating, and pondering the cosmos, The Salteens returned to the Hive studios for the sixth time this past weekend, where they tracked a talented 4 piece horn section on 3 songs off their upcoming third album (working title 'Moths'... or maybe we will run a contest to decide the album title).

11.24.06 BLIND DIVINE
Trip Hop / Down-tempo / Ambient
Official description: "Spooky, ambient, and hauntingly erotic, sultry female vocals and strange landscapes are the cure for chronic insomniacs, hypochondriacs, and patients of psychotherapy. Understated and overrated."
Blind Divine released two albums this year. 'Desire To Destroy' and 'Music For Unmade Movies, Vol. 1'. Both sound completely different from one another. The latter is mysterious & unnerving and 'Desire To Destroy' is lush and relaxing. Both are very interesting and enjoyable pieces of work!

11.22.06 GENERAL CONCERT BABBLE: IDEAS & ETIQUETTE
Don't mind me. Just thinking about concerts in general and I have some ideas.
1) Fat folk love music too.
If you are going to play the U.S. you had better make some t-shirts in XXL. Is it just me or are XL's smaller than they use to be? Yeah, I thought it was just me. Hell, throw in some triple Xs too. They shrink you know!
Sorry, about the above remark -
but the hard truth, in a very generalized way, is this: while the French ride their bicycles with baguettes in their baskets we drive cars with briefcases of White Castle cheeseburgers on the seats. I know this, my husband and I were guilty of that last night and it wasn't a first.
2) If you are going to cut in front of people in the audience, please mind their drinks. Be a little more courteous. And for God sakes, watch those cigarettes if you still have the right to puff.
3) Don't be afraid to dress as you would normally dress. I was one of two people in pink at Morrissey last night. So frickin' what?
* It was easy for my friends to find
me
* I didn't have to put any effort
into what I was going to wear
* That cranberry and vodka drink
that got catapulted onto my pink
sweatshirt left a stain that was
hardly noticeable!
11.22.06 MORRISSEY / KRISTEEN YOUNG CHICAGO CONCERT REVIEW
I went to the Morrissey and Kristeen Young concert at the Aragon in Chicago last night. Took 4 hours to get to the venue and I got only three hours of sleep. However, it was completely worth it of course! The review can be found by clicking here.
11.21.06 NEW HENRY ROLLINS BOOK
A Dull Roar: The full title is A Dull Roar (What I Did On My Summer
Deracination). When my old band mates and I decided that after not
playing together since 1997, we were going to get back together and tour in
the summer of 2006, I figured there might be some good stories to tell.
So, in March I started a journal to document the four months I allotted
myself to prepare mentally and physically for the tour and also the
tour itself.
During this period, I finished the 2nd season of my show on
The Independent Film Channel, worked in the film Wrong Turn 2, performed
at the Download Festival in England and made trips in and out of New
York City for band practice and press. As I have in the past, I
overworked, underslept, blew out joints and generally had a swell time. The tour
itself had its shares of ups and downs, which are documented in the
book.
I know what some of you are thinking, and no, it's not the Dispatches
file. For fans of my books Broken Summers and Smile You're Traveling, you may find this book to your liking. We printed a limited 1st edition of 1000 copies that will differentiate itself from the rest of the
press run by having a different colored cover, a signed & numbered title
page and the coolest part (to me anyway) is the flexibound cover. This
book will not be at retail for a long time, if ever."

11.20.06 BURDEN BROTHERS
Rock / Alternative / Pop
Partial official description: "Mercy. It’s a concept musicians only have a passing familiarity with, since they are only rarely afforded it. But they know the drill going in. Once you decide to become a musician, you’re stuck for life. You’re always a musician, whether you’re kicking out the jams or breaking up the band, whether you’re awaiting the next high or weathering the latest low. That’s the way it goes. That is your burden."

11.18.06 45 GRAVE – NOW YOU KNOW
Punk / Gothic / Metal
Partial official message: "What's in a name? Now, lots of people have guessed what the name (45 Grave) means. Some of them are extremely entertaining.
The story goes: Don and I were shopping on Fairfax, by Fairfax High. We went to the thrift store and found a button that read GRAVES 45. It must have been a football player from Fairfax. It was the school's colors. We had just finished Riboflavin amd LAFMS wanted a band name for the track. We never thought about it. We played music for fun. Throwing names back and forth, Don pulled out the button. GRAVES 45. mmmmmm.
Paul switched it to 45 GRAVES. It sounded better. I took the 'S' off. 45 GRAVE. I'm spooky. So the name was submitted to LAFMS and 45 GRAVE was born."

11.18.06 WHITE DEMONS
Rock
"White Demons shows are events that teeter on the brink of chaos, but are held in command by a combo of raw power and dynamic musicianship. On stage, Nick K. transforms into a rock and roll preacher, belting out songs that are soul shaking sermons, punctuated by twisted demon howls that sound like Doritos in a blender on frappé.
In end of 2005, the band finally captured this live energy and giant sound in the studio. Lightning in a bottle of Tequila. The result is 'Say Go', a ten song shot of adrenalin released by Sonic Swirl Records." - Sonic Swirl
These guys totally rock! Like the majority of bands these days, they also have a MySpace site. So, visit www.myspace.com/whitedemons to listen to some of their music clips.
11.17.06 NEW WOLFMEN SINGLE
Rock / Experimental / Punk
Official message: "'Kama Sutra' is the debut single from The Wolfmen, following hot on the heels of August’s limited edition 'Jackie Says' EP.
Damaged Goods – the label that brought you the Manic Street Preachers and, more recently, Holly Golightly – says there’s “a bit of a T-Rex flavour” to 'Kama Sutra' and calls the B-side, 'TV’s On John Wayne’s Been Shot Again', “a mad 2 minute punk techno noise fest.”"
Wolfmen are Marco Pirroni (Adam & The Ants, Siouxsie And The Banshees, The Models,... ) and Chris Constantinou (JackieOnAssid, Drill, Adam Ant,... ) .

11.17.06 NEW YORK ALCOHOLIC ANXIETY ATTACK & JOOLZ TONIGHT
Official message: "'Bradford Beat Happening: The two-year collaboration between award-winning novelist, poet, visual artist, tattooist and spoken word maven Joolz ('the UK's Patti Smith') and the rock band New York Alcoholic Anxiety Attack, fronted by charismatic young poet-lyricist Mik Davis, is unique in the worlds of literature and music; for an artiste of Joolz' maturity and standing to work so closely and so long with an upcoming band demonstrates the tremendous power of her commitment to brilliant new talent, to the excellence and musical creativity of the band itself and Joolz' legendary ability to speak across generations, gender, cultures and lifestyles. It is incredibly rare to see a genuine, authentic, non-corporate, counter-culture project not funded by governmental grants or record/publishing/publicity company interests but sustained over a long period by mutual respect and a love of creativity for its own sake. And they get a lot of fun out of it too.
So this show sees one of the UK's most enduring polymathic artistic talents working alongside one of the UK's hottest young rock bands each playing their own sets and also collaborating on numbers together. Winner."

11.17.06 THE GATHERING
Other / Rock / Ambient
Partial official description: "Confronted with the unavoidable sensory overload and the galloping synchronisation of senses it is getting increasingly difficult to invent sounds and melodies that are standing individually for themselves and only for themselves without going into extremes. The Dutch band The Gathering has accomplished just that achievement with their ninth album 'Home'. But up to that piece of art, it took them a long way full of creative skinning, self-conquest and a strong striving towards perfection of sound."
We really like these guys! Check out some great music clips, like 'Alone' and 'Your Troubles Are Over' (both are from their 2006 album, 'Home'), visiting by www.myspace.com/gatheringofficial.

As a teaser, we're releasing this single in
the US but get your hands on the re-mix album if you can find it.
Podcast is live at remixblackstrobe.com." - Beggars Banquet
Partial official band description: "Over the years, Black Strobe have remixed everyone from Nitzer Ebb to Rammstein, Bloc Party to Royksopp.
Their "doom disco" style has ignited dance-floors with singles such as 'Inner Strings', 'Me and Madonna', and this year's club smash 'Last Dub On Earth'. The duo have subsequently earned a unique place in the shadowy hallways of popular music."

11.16.06 SUGARCULT MESSAGE
Rock / Alternative / Punk
Official partial message: "Wassup rockers! Greetings from the South (today we're in Charlotte,
SC); today was a good day: I awoke to news that our next single ('Los
Angeles') got added early to one of the best radio stations in America,
San Francisco's Live 105fm, which means they will stick it in their
playlist and see what happens...
Later in the day, Tim and I did a radio station visit in Charlotte where we signed a give-away guitar for a canned food drive contest (I wrote on it in bold letters, "THIS MACHINE WILL GET YOU LAID!" The real highlight of the day was when me, Tim, and that dude Vasquez, the bassist of Damone (who joined our tour yesterday) walked a few blocks to this totally authentic, locally owned fried chicken joint called the Chicken Coup and scored the crispiest, greasiest, yummiest
dinner ever; the lady who took my order had to be pushing 90, and I dig old people in general, so I was happy!
Hopefully by now you've checked out my side-project band Bad Astronaut;
our 3rd record just came out yesterday on Fat Wreck Chords it's called
'12 Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment'. I'm really proud of it, so
come on people now pick up a copy or seek it out online and give it a
nice loud listen." Cheers, Marko and the greasy chickens known professionally as Sugarcult

Pop
Official message: "Hello...we're back from our first tour! I've been keeping a tour journal in our blog, you should go check it out. It contains lots of fun facts and stories about our time on the road, as well as pictures.
We now have a few weeks off and then we're back on the road again. We'll be doing a bunch of midwest shows with the band +/- including two at Schubas (18+ and 21+) on 11/25, followed by our first ever shows in Canada, more East Coast shows, and then finally a trip down south. We've never been there either.
All confirmed shows are on our page but many more will be added soon. I have also been trying to add a fourth song to our page but for some reason it won't upload. I'm frustrated, but I have a feeling it will all work out eventually." - Love,

11.09.06 ROLLING STONES BLACK TONGUE SHIRT
Official message: "Dear Stones Fans, Paint L.A. Black with the Los Angeles Black Tongue Event Shirt!
As the amazing 05/06 tour begins drawing to a close, we are happy to present you with one final pre-order for this run of shows. Conceived as a bootleg shirt on the streets of Mexico, our final event shirt of the year was adopted by the Stones security crew and, at the suggestion of Charlie Watts, has now been adapted into an ultra-cool shirt for the fans. Once the shirt was discovered during the run to Mexico, the security crew began sporting these black-tongue-on-black tees for the rest of the tour. Now you can get your own-which will also feature an explosion on back with Dodger Stadium event info. Plus, we have taken the black tongue and fashioned it into a commemorative pin to complete the set.
Pre-order the shirt and the pin together for only $35. As with all pre-orders, we don't expect this shirt to be available at retail stores, so you need to get it here. We'll be shipping orders out on Monday, November 20, so if you select Express Shipping, you should get your shirt on the 22nd, in time for sporting it at L.A.'s premiere event of the season: the Rolling Stones in concert! This pre-order will close at 3 PM EST on November 20, so get your order in now.
It is, of course, hard to show you exactly how distinctive this black-on-black tongue looks on your computer screen, so you'll have to trust us when we say that this is what the insiders of L.A. will be wearing. It's your chance to flaunt the tongue in public, while keeping it on the down low." Thanks,
Rolling Stones camp

The well-loved Chicago Reader just sent the following bulletin:

For more see Peter Margasak's report."

11.06.06 THE RETROSIC
"The Retrosic is on the offensive once again! Their groundbreaking album 'God Of Hell' in 2004 earned them a place of respect on the dark dance floors of North America. For fans clamoring for new material and those yet to experience the world of The Retrosic, the end is here! 'Nightcrawler' is ten tracks of aggressive sonic mayhem.
From the moment the perfectly titled opening track 'Unleash Hell' hits you, you realize how destructive the force is that you have knowingly let loose in your world. The album bulldozes its way from start to finish, with each track harder and more forceful than the one before it. Songs like 'Revolution,' 'Desperate Youth,' and 'The Lucky Ones' will obliterate any dance floor with the power of 10,000 nuclear warheads. No-one is safe. There’s no where to hide. Nightcrawler is coming for you!" - Metropolis

DVD Side features High Resolution Stereo plus videos for 'Just Like Honey,' 'You Trip Me Up,' and 'Never Understand'." - Amazon.com

11.04.06 JOHANN JOHANNSSON
"Johann Johannsson is an Icelandic composer and musician whose elegiac, gradually-evolving music is spellbinding in its beauty. His first full-length release for 4AD - called 'IBM 1401, A User's Manual' - is available now.
The album, which is made up of five long movements, was recorded at Barrandov Studios, Smecky Soundstage in Prague with a 60 piece string orchestra. It's a richly textured, elegantly coherent and achingly moving work." - 4ad

11.02.06 NEW LIVE CURE DVD
Official message: "In 2005 a nascent Cure trio of Robert Smith, Simon Gallup and Jason Cooper celebrated the return of former guitarist Porl Thompson with a series of nine eclectic headline festival shows across Europe. The quartets unique blend of passion and power proved to be a thrilling combination, and the summer set a new benchmark for Cure live highs.
'Festival 2005' presents a selection of these performances captured by a mix of fans, crew and on-the-night-big-screen cameras.
Edited by Daren Butler and mixed by Keith Uddin in collaboration with Robert Smith, this 30 song DVD is a wonderful reminder of how and why The Cure remain one of the most vibrant bands on the planet."
