3.28.08 NIK FREITAS

Indie / Pop / Other

Official news: "Nik Freitas’ Team Love debut 'Sun Down' — equal parts wry, warm and sonorous — is the end product of several years of ups and downs. Freitas writes, plays, engineers and produces every note on his records. Not that he’s got a lot of expensive gear. A visit to his Poppy Peak studio/shed reveals that Nik is working low-budget minor miracles, the kind of miracles one receives via hundreds of hours on Craigslist." - Team Love

'Sun Down' is scheduled for a May 8th release.

3.26.08 MINISTRY & CO-CONSPIRATORS

Ministry & Co-Conspirators:'Cover Up':

Official news: "“This is THE Ministry party album. We are still a rock band, we can still have fun. We don’t just bitch about Bush and global oligarchies. Remember, you’re dealing with someone who still has Revolting Cock(s) stock in his locker so here ya go!,” confirms Ministry's Al Jourgensen about 'Cover Up', recorded by Ministry & Co-Conspirators. 'Cover Up' simply is one of the hottest, nastiest rock'n'roll albums ever recorded and sees Jourgensen and Co-Conspirators paying tribute to some of the most memorable PAR-TEE rock songs, mostly from the 8-track era, and to those artists who first laid them down - Deep Purple, T-Rex, ZZ Top, The Doors, Mountain, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and more.

Playing on the 'Cover Up' title, Jourgensen has injected himself into various conspiracy theory photographs throughout the release's artwork. In addition to fellow Ministry guitarist Sin Quirin (Revolting Cocks), Jourgensen enlisted an impressive group of Co-Conspirators for 'Cover Up' - Fear Factory front man Burton C. Bell (also Ascension of The Watchers) sings on the Rolling Stones’ 'Under My Thumb', Revolting Cocks' Josh Bradford provides vocals for Golden Earring's 'Radar Love', and Prong vocalist Thomas Victor lends his pipes to Deep Purple's 'Space Truckin' and Ram Jam's 'Black Betty', which also features the Hell Paso Mosh Choir.

Additional Co-Conspirators include the late Paul Raven (Ministry / Killing Joke), Tony Campos and Wayne Static (Static X), Edu Mussi (Echoes and Shadows) and Plastilina Mosh. 'Cover Up' will also include Ministry’s cover of The Doors’ 'Roadhouse Blues' (the version can also be found on Ministry's September 2007 release, 'The Last Sucker'), and Deep Purple’s 'Space Truckin', all tracks culminating in Jourgensen's personal punk rock rendition of Louis Armstrong’s 'Wonderful World'.

- The last ever Ministry album
- Features 12 newly recorded and classic covers..." - Plastic Head

"Foals are a five-piece dance-rock band currently living in and native to the town of Oxford, England. Completing the circuit between the minimalism of American composer Steve Reich, guitars that sound like insects and tennis player Andy Roddick, theirs is a uniquely winning formula."

3.24.08 NLX

3.24.08 OUR BABBLE, EASTER TV

So far I've watched the last half of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony and I have to say that Joan Jett looked as gorgeous as ever! She doesn't age at all. Nor does John Mellencamp apparently. BTW - his son, who's gotta be about 10 years old from appearances, played guitar during his performance! How cool is that?

The Aftermath: Station Fire Five Years Later concert show was a fantastic idea but what on earth was going on with Jeff Keith's (Tesla) voice? It sounded like a cartoon version on their performance of 'Love Song' especially. He did mention being under the weather - he wasn't kidding. Gotta give it to him for singing regardless, but it seriously hurt. - Stacy

3.24.08 ELF POWER

Psychedelic / Psychedelic / Folk Rock

Official message: "Rykodisc is proud to present you with the brand new record from Athens, Georgia's favorite Elephant 6'ers, Elf Power.

'In A Cave', out March 25, sees the band perfecting their glam-inflected indie pop, and it could easily be the band's best record to date. But hey, don't believe us, check it out for yourselves..."

3.19.08 READY FIRE AIM

Electronica / Alternative / Pop

Ready Fire Aim’s debut CD, 'This Changes Nothing', comes out on May 27th...

"A collaboration between singer, poet, author, actor and political commentator Sage Rader and DJ / producer Shaun Morris (AKA Stakka), Ready Fire Aim have come up with a stealth concept album that conjures shades of Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, The Postal Service and even Pink Floyd, but with a twisted, hyper-processed and hypnotic sound that truly sets them apart. And you can dance to it."

We highly recommend checking out the songs 'Wannabe Your' and 'So Fine'. Click here (www.myspace.com/readyfireaimnyc) to have a listen, and for more information.

3.19.08 DE NOVO DAHL

Pop / Indie / Experimental

"De Novo Dahl, an ecletic pysch-pop crew that favors stunning Nudie suits as stage uniforms; names The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev among its major influences; and has nothing against having, say, beach-themed shows in the dead of winter (where, of course, fans wearing bikinis and trunks get in for free). De Novo Dahl - whose moniker is a blending of Latin for "the new" and the last name of creative and visual author Roald Dahl - is poised to take its creativity to strange new heights." - Newbury Comics

"'Move Every Muscle, Make Every Sound' hits stores on March 25! Don't forget to pre-order here (www.newburycomics.com) to get your copy signed by the band. Woohoo." - Keith (De Novo Dahl)

3.18.08 NEW ALBUM FROM THE RACONTEURS NEXT WEEK

Rock / Indie / Blues

Official message: "The Raconteurs to release new album 'Consolers of the Lonely' everywhere... in one week.

"Album" meaning: full length vinyl, CD and digital formats; and "everywhere" meaning: local mom and pop Indie retailers, corporate superstores, supermarkets, iTunes, Amazon, the band’s own website and any other location that could get the record up and going this quickly (some places couldn’t move this fast, so they will join in as soon as they can).

It contains 14 new recordings and is being released globally on Third Man Records in conjunction with our marketing/distribution partners, XL Recordings and Warner Brothers Records.

The album was mastered and completed in the first week of March. It was then taken immediately to a vinyl pressing plant. Then to a CD pressing plant. Then preparations to sell it digitally began. March 25th became the soonest date to have it available in EVERY FORMAT AT ONCE. The band have done no interviews or advertisements for this record before this announcement.

The purpose: to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised. We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding it’s availability, reception or perception.

With this release, The Raconteurs are forgoing the usual months of lead time for press and radio set up, as well as forgoing the all important “first week sales.” We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it thereafter. The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by it’s first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it.

Another purpose was to also allow people to have their own choice as to exactly which format they would like to hear the album in IMMEDIATELY, rather than having to wait for their favorite format to become available. The band are also not releasing any version of this record that contains bonus tracks. Musically this album will be the same as the band created it no matter what format it is purchased in (The sound quality of each format however, is a different story. The Raconteurs recommend hearing it on vinyl, but the choice is of course up to the listener).

The band also prefer that fans buy the album as a whole instead of breaking up the tracks, but until iTunes and other digital services allows bands to release their albums with the option of NOT breaking it up, it will be sold in that fashion on those particular sites. On the band’s website however, the album will be sold in its entirety as an mp3 at 320kb bit rate. Also in Japan, fans will be able to download the record via their mobile phones, as that is how a majority of recorded music is consumed there.

The reason we are announcing this release one week ahead of time is because of retail pre-ordering and stocking, information about this album’s imminent release was bound to come to light and could be confusing to fans. Also in the event that the record leaks, we didn’t want this method of release to be seen as a REACTION to such a leak. It’s not. The actual worst thing about a leak is the usual poor sound quality, akin to watching a movie on a wristwatch instead of in a theater. Which for the album’s creators is a bit of a letdown, but again, it is completely up to the listener.

There will be a video up on the internet for the first single, “Salute Your Solution”, on the 25th as well, provided it gets edited in time. We just filmed it the other day!

We hope not to confuse anyone with too many options, or deny them the formats that they like best. The Raconteurs feel very strongly that music has worth and should be treated as such. Thank you to all those who respect music in this fashion, and thank you to our label partners for working with us to get this album to fans in as many formats as possible all at once.

Thank you, and we hope that you enjoy 'Consolers Of The Lonely'." Sincerely, The Raconteurs

3.18.08 OUR BABBLE

How sickening it is to read about the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch." Is there really a plastic garbage continent growing in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii? Good God.

I've rather been enjoying a website called The Consumerist: Shoppers Bite Back (http://consumerist.com). Not only is it an entertaining read, I now know that there are many other people ticked off at Best Buy.

Not sure how I came across this itch-inducing site but I should've known by the heading, 'What's Lived In You?', not to go further. If you enjoy reading personal horror stories of parasites and such, click below. - Stacy

3.12.08 SERA CAHOONE

Sera played in Carissa’s Weird and played drums on the Band of Horses album 'Everything All The Time', and her self-titled, self-released debut record was one of our favorites of 2006.

Not that we really need to sweeten this pot, but if you pre-order (www.subpop.com) the new CD by March 18th, we'll take 2 bucks off our already strikingly low price of $12, thereby only charging you, esteemed and intelligent consumer, a measly $10. Plus, for you, there will be stickers and, oh yes, there will be buttons!"

3.10.08 TIPS FROM MUSICIAN (& GUEST CORRESPONDENT), MICHAEL T. GRACE

Copyright © 2006 by Allison Peret. All rights reserved.

I’ve spent the last few years playing 85% professionally and I must say that the biggest charge I get, besides listening to old Steely Dan records, is playing live in front of a big audience. I've noticed on tour it’s best to get into a routine and stick to it. A lot of athletes swear by it, and let’s face it, being in a band is a lot like being an athlete. The practice, the preparation, the constant sweating, the extracurricular groupie time, etc.

One thing you realize quickly is you DO NOT want to stick out like a sore thumb, or caught with said thumb firmly affixed to the interior of an unmentionable orifice, such as some younger bands (that want to make a name for themselves) do. I compiled a small list of things I could rattle off the top of my head until something shiny bounced into my field of vision...

1. First of all, I cannot stress this enough, if you for some reason have a bunch of laminates on lanyards from the B stage at the county fair, do not expect the members of Vertical Horizon to take you seriously.

2. For the sake of your livelihood, try to get everyone on a reasonable curfew. Might I suggest 5 AM?

3. If you have roadies, make sure they know how to actually use the instruments, especially if you have a Synthesist. No, ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ is not on the set list.

4. There is no such thing as sloppy seconds for the bass player.

5. Try to keep a low key before stage time. If you get too obnoxious I guarantee it'll be that much harder to convince the owner to take you off the "Blackball" list.

6. Don't try to pull a James Brown. You will not catch the mic and you will knock half your grill out.

7. Chances are one day you are going to play a show in a real hick town. That should be the day you give the pink armbands a rest.

8. Don't give your van key to the bouncer outside the Metro. He will not give your van back due to the fact he's not a bouncer (something should have tipped me off when he ran off cackling and his paper "VALAY" sign fell off his back).

9. I rarely ever show up at load-in with the clothes I'm wearing onstage. Looking good onstage is a plus, and going to the local PDQ in vinyl pants and make-up has a tendency to raise a few eyebrows. Plus, this gives you more flexibility if you soil yourself onstage after you eat the catering.

10. As part of your tour routine, I found it helps getting a balanced diet. For me, that means staying away from grease (except if you're somewhere renowned for food, like Oil City, PA... uh, that was a joke) and milk for 2 hours. Drinking a V8 1 hour before and a Red Bull 10 minutes before going on stage gives me the energy to rock out a 45 min. - 1 hour & 15 min. long set. It’s a nice alternative to downing some Coronas, gorging on candy, and then enjoying half an 8-ball.

So, stick to those rough guidelines and you won't end up with egg on your face when you show up to rock the house.

3.7.08 KILLING JOKE

Official message: "Original line up returns! Jaz, Geordie, Youth and Big Paul World Tour:

Finally, after numerous line-up changes through the years, all original Killing Joke members reunite for new album and world tour.

Drummer, Paul Ferguson, rejoins the line up for the first time since 1987 enabling a whole new generation of fans to see Killing Joke’s legendary original formation. Diehard fans have been waiting for this moment for two decades!

Bassist, Martin ‘Youth’ Glover also steps back into the live arena after a near 15yr hiatus, having not played live with Killing Joke since 1994’s Pandemonium tour.

The tour will see Killing Joke take up a two night residency in most venues offering a different set on each evening. On the first night, they will play their first two albums in their entirety, 1980’s self-titled album followed by the album ‘What’s This…For!'. Their second performance in each city will treat fans to 1994’s Pandemonium and the Island Records singles of ’79 to ’80.

Once described by Ferguson as ‘the sound of the earth vomiting’, Killing Joke is anthemic and grandiose in it’s evocation of nightmare visions. Taking a sarcastic jab at authority and perceived reality to a sonically charged mixture of post punk and metal, Killing Joke’s heavy guitars and pounding tribal drums conjure a primitive atmosphere of doom, gloom and resistance.

Notorious for their use of inflammatory imagery, a backlash against a world they perceived as ever more materialistic, unjust and conservative, Killing Joke, railed against the establishment and created a unique sound from their very conception.

Ironically, in the current musical climate with it’s obsession with rehashing eighties sounds, the 80s saw Killing Joke really pushing music forward, incorporating danceable elements with aggressive, grinding guitars and thumping drums. With elements of proto-techno rock, their post apocalyptic vision has inspired bands as diverse and influential as Nirvana, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden and Godflesh. Killing Joke have always been and continue to be more than just a band.

Godfathers of post-punk, Killing Joke return with their eagerly anticipated new album to coincide with their world tour. Album release date TBC.

"At last a ray of sunlight to illuminate these dark days. It is indeed my deepest pleasure to announce the dates of the 29th anniversary of the gathering. As usual we are never content sitting on the laurels of past Glories, a new Killing Joke recording is scheduled this summer! Both Geordie and myself are thrilled as we hope you are with the line up, such anticipation comes as no surprise considering we have not played together since the Brighton Top Rank in 1982. We always knew this day would come after all it was inevitable. We hope all gatherers will join us in warmly welcoming back to active service our brothers Big Paul and Youth. The mysterious chemistry of the original line up is back, let there be gladness in your hearts." - Jaz."

3.6.08 HOCICO

Industrial / Electronica / Electro

Hocico - 'Memorias Atras':

Official news: "The Gods of Hardfloor are back with a mighty beast of an album! 'Memorias Atrás' is a sonic trip to Hell, and, like two horsemen of the Apocalypse, Erk and Racso are riding high on thudding beats, solid bass and sounds straight out of purgatory, thus unleashing an electronic earthquake at maximum power.

The Mexican Electro-maniacs have returned to the raw and straight-in-the-face sound of their early days, but darker, more massive and way more intense!"

3.6.08 SUNSET RECORDS - PROJECT WOMAN

Official message: "Ohio record label announces its debut release to benefit Project Woman Springfield, OH. March 6, 2008 – Sunset Records, a newly founded independent record label is taking a refreshingly unique approach to promoting various artists from around the world. Whether you're into Acoustic, Alternative, Classic Rock, Country, Easy Listening, Folk, Pop, or even Punk, owner Troy Cromwell assures all music lovers that his label will have something for everyone.

"My vision to compile an all-girl or female fronted musical recording that would benefit Project Woman of Ohio came about late last year; I've always been an avid fan of bands like Blondie, Heart, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The sound of a woman's voice compliments an arrangement like nothing else can." The impressive twenty-one song compilation surely boasts both, beautifully inspiring arrangements and complimenting vocals, guaranteed to gratify even the most distinguished listener. "I knew I wanted to give something back to my community." Troy goes on to say that "the number of women and children who are suffering from the hands of abuse is staggering" and he felt compelled to bring awareness to the people. "Sunset Records want to support Project Woman of Ohio and their mission to end domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault."

Shortly after coordinating a small number of local musicians the project took a huge leap and went worldwide. "The overwhelming response I was getting from other artists was so positive, and that was very encouraging." Within a few short weeks Sunset Records had bands from as far away as London, Australia, and even New Zealand wanting to be a part of the compilation. "I am very excited and extremely grateful to all of the artists that have been so kind to join together in our quest to make Project Woman something very, very special." The beautiful cover art that adorns the CD was donated by an 18 year old female artist from Sophia, Bulgaria. Her painting titled 'Queen of Love' captures what's waiting inside for the listener, promising - you can judge this CD by its cover.

March 8th will mark the release of Project Woman. "We picked this release date to celebrate International Women's Day," a national holiday. "Women on all continents often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together so they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development."

Future plans include adding in house small run duplication/replication services, and the possibility of collaborating with a local recording studio. "We'd like to someday be able to offer the total package to the artists we sign, everything from video production and sound recording to manufacturing retail ready discs and promotions." Sunset Records are actively seeking interested musicians for up and coming projects. All of which would benefit deserving organizations across the globe.

Support both Project Woman of Ohio and Sunset Records by visiting www.sunsetrecords.org."

3.3.08 CURRENTS

Indie / Alternative

Currents - 'First New Tomorrow' CD:

"For fans of Deerhoof, Unwound, Blonde Redhead. Drawing on influences as diverse as guitar rock, punk, jazz, classical, beat- and whitmanesque-style poetry, Currents are constantly trying to push the basic two guitars, drums and bass rock formula into as many different directions as possible. The result is moody music with an edge, with repetitive beats, spiralling guitar-interplay and a simplistic punk energy.

Lyrically, themes like everyday ruminations on life, love and nature are touched upon, often governed by whim. Familiar enough to keep you tuned in, yet with enough new personality to wonder what’s around the next chord. The slightly rasping, raw, impassioned vocals of Christian Sommer weave in and out of the music, forming part of the canvas, and not the only part you hear. Rightly so, as the twiddly guitar breaks like the one on 'Cloud' are just as noteworthy. A fresh new hope from Sweden that deserves a global audience." - Tonevendor

Check out some music from Annie Barker's new CD, 'Mountains and Tumult'.

The album was produced by Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins). You can hear his influence, on 'Kissed Me' for one. We like what we've heard overall, but we aren't quite taken by 'Sausage Fingers'.
