6.27.07 OUR BABBLE
Larry King really called Ringo Starr "George" at one point last night? Larry had Paul, Ringo, and Yoko on together as guests. Nice to know that even the big guys make boo-boos.
Autographs... my whole life I have ignored countless opportunities to obtain autographs. I have a few now but for the most part the Babble and Beat office walls are bare. I'm not sure why but I've always felt bad asking for them. I think it all started with a bad experience I had yearrrrs ago (July 7th, 1989 @ Chicago's Cabaret Metro) with a band I'll always love, Clan of Xymox (then going by Xymox). The opening band, Moev, couldn't have been any cooler though.
I never want to impose or treat someone like they aren't human - especially when I've already been granted an interview or backstage pass (isn't that enough?). However, it would be a lot more fun, and appropriate, to be surrounded by such framed gems.
Mind you, this is my own personal hang-up. Musicians are use to being asked for autographs! I'm likely one of very few who have any issues with it. I definitely need to change my thinking. - Stacy
Here's an unlikely way to help solve the problem, but what the hell... if you're a musician with lots of time to waste, feel free to make my day by mailing me an autograph for the office (Babble and Beat, PO Box 327, Oconomowoc, WI 53066-0327)! - Stacy

6.26.07 STIFF LITTLE FINGERS AUCTION - HELP PAUL OF THE RUTS
Official message: "This Epiphone PR5-E guitar owned and played by Stiff Little Fingers' Jake Burns is being auctioned online, starting today. Visit Ebay.com to track and participate in this auction.
This guitar is being auctioned to help an old friend, Paul Fox from The Ruts, who is sadly terminally ill with cancer. While Paul is continuing to work at the moment, this will obviously become harder as time goes on. Therefore, some friends are trying to help him as much as possible.
This guitar was played by Jake on the Stiff Little Fingers albums: 'Get a Life', 'Tinderbox' and 'Hope Street'. The guitar will be signed by Jake, personalized to the winning bidder. This was very much a working instrument and as such its electrics will need some attention."

6.26.07 NEW MARC ALMOND
The new Marc Almond (Soft Cell) CD is released in the U.S. today!
Official news: "My new album, 'Stardom Road', is finally released. The album makes reference to all the different musical genres I've worked in, from the 50's and 60's (Bobby Darin, Gene Pitney and David Bowie), 70's and 80's ('Memorabilia' and T Rex in Kitsch), orchestral pop and torch songs. The only way to describe it is as a musical based on my life starring a version of me.
It was produced by Tris Penna and Marius de Vries and arranged by Mike Smith. It contains one new song, an optimistic ballad, the self explanatory 'Redeem Me' (Beauty Will Redeem The World...)."

6.21.07 LEAVES' EYES
Gothic / Metal / Rock
Official news on 6.17.07: "Last weekend was a little bit turbulent. After the successful Viruta Rock festival in Spain Liv and Alex flew to the Metal Hammer UK Awards in London. "We'd never thought we would ever play in a bullfight arena; we are all vegetarians...
The Spanish fans were great, and the concerts of Atrocity and Leaves' Eyes turned out fantastic although we struggled with some technical problems. However, our journey back from Malaga via Zurich to Stuttgart was not that easy at all. After our stop in Zurich our flight back to Stuttgart was cancelled due to a big thunderstorm. In the middle of the night we had to return to Germany by bus. In the very next morning we had to fly to London," Liv tells.

6.19.07 ATTENTION WISCONSIN MUSICIANS: MADISON BAND LOOKING FOR DRUMMER & LEAD GUITARIST
Rock / Acoustic / Alternative
Pearl Snap Saturday needs 2 new members - a drummer & a lead guitarist...
Official message: "The band, Pearl Snap Saturday, recently parted ways with their lead guitarist and their drummer. The band is looking for a drummer and a lead guitarist, both being hard-working, dedicated, and talented and who can help out this band in the long-term. We have been playing the downtown Madison area and we have gigs lined up into July and will be adding more dates in the future as well.
We have some great opportunities this Fall including playing at The Union a few times in September (on the Terrace & the Rathskeller).
We practice on the west side of Madison in a great facility (free of charge) a few times a week and play on the weekends. We own great equipment - pretty much Mackie everything (speakers, monitors, mixer) and are ready to rock again as soon as we put the final pieces of this band back together.
We play a mix of rock, pop, classic rock, oldies, and mix in some hip hop as well (influential bands include O.A.R., The Killers, U2, Dave Matthews Band, Guster, etc...). We have originals we play as well, and ideally would like to play only originals at some point.
We are all in our early 20s, but we are not set on an age requirement. We would like you to be within a few years of us though (older or younger).

6.19.07 GO-BETWEENS / ROBERT & GRANT
Out now! 'Intermission - The Best Of The Solo Recordings', Robert Forster and Grant McLennan ...
Official partial message: "The best solo recordings from the founding members of the Go-Betweens on 2 individual CD sets. 26 tracks recorded between 1990 and 1997. Contains special 28 page lyric book.
After The Go-Betweens disbanded in 1989, founding members and songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan recorded four albums each. Here their radically different writing styles were showcased; Robert arch and dramatic, Grant earnest and romantic.
It is important to remember that throughout the 80s The Go-Betweens were a cult band and their solo outings would sadly court only a rarified audience. But for those who took a punt on such magical albums as Horsebreaker Star and Danger In The Past the rewards were plentiful and contained some of their best work. It was a reminder of how great these two songwriters were - Forster's isolated vignettes of longing and McLennan's great outpourings of sublime pop music were thrown into relief." - Beggars Banquet

6.18.07 PETER HIMMELMAN
Folk Rock / Rock
Peter Himmelman's new album, 'The Pigeons Couldn't Sleep' is scheduled for a July 24th release...
Partial official message: "Free feature length documentary DVD included with the CD release!
Peter's tenth studio album is titled The Pigeons Couldn’t Sleep. "The pigeons are different things to different people," says Peter. "Old ghosts, bad politics, broken expectations, wars of all shapes and sizes... It’s a restless world out there; nobody can sleep — even the birds feel the vibrations."
The Pigeons Couldn't Sleep’s 13 tracks range from blistering and bluesy house-shakers to ballads of tender urgency. The album begins with a haunted slide-guitar passage by Peter and ends with the gospel tinged 'If We Could Hold Each Other’s Hunger', about the power of empathy. In between, Peter proffers such powerful songs as 'Gratitude', 'War of Words' and 'The Ship of Last Hope'.
Sample some of the music from The Pigeons Couldn’t Sleep here: (peterhimmelman.com).

6.15.07 SUTCLIFFE JUGEND
Experimental / Industrial / Alternative
Official message: "The first Sutcliffe Jugend studio album in eight years - 'This Is The Truth' quite possibly stands as one of the most original and perfectly balanced noise compositions of the last 10 years. It references and uses classic Sutcliffe Jugend of old while bringing in an entirely unique and fresh element one does not hear in noise.
This album is a brilliant blend of foreboding tension and anxiety while using the most lively, disturbing, and textual elements of noise. All of which are brought together with the phenomenal detail and balance of an accomplished electronic composer. Songs that you think will explode leave you hanging with tension, while others erupt with violence out of nowhere. It's an absolutely brilliant album that was worth the wait." - Cold Meat Industry
This stuff is off the hook bizarro! Unfortunately, we couldn't find any new music clips but we did find a couple of older ones. The song 'Fear and Anticipation', from 'The Victim As Beauty' release, brought the Eraserhead film to mind.

6.15.07 RENTOKILL
Punk
Official message: "Rentokill's 'Antichorus' CD - For fans of NOFX, Rancid and Against Me!...
Blasting intense Punk Rock with a political and powerful message, Austria's very own Rentokill have been almost constantly on tour since their inception. There is always a tasty note of individuality and progression in their music, outlined by fast and exact drumming, striking melodies and hard driven guitars which flow aggressively along under the well thought out socio-political lyrics and the vocalist's characteristic rasping voice.
Nothing but raw emotion and catchy punk rock, and their fifteen-song studio album "Antichorus" captures it perfectly. Straight forward politically charged punk rock!" - Plastic Head

6.14.07 theSTART
Electronica / New Wave / Glam
Official message: "Formed in 1998, theStart has graced the rosters of many record labels including 143 Records / Atlantic Records, The Label / Geffen Records and Nitro Records. Credited as one of the first bands of the new wave revival, the punk/synth rock band gained notoriety with their albums 'Shakedown!' and 'Initiation'.
Now poised to release their newest album 'Ciao, Baby' on Metropolis, theStart have refined and nurtured their sound into a dancier version of their former selves. However, the punk and new wave elements are still visible through the pop sensibilities that they have incorporated. Tracks like 'Wartime' and 'Master Plan' exhibit the new evolution, while songs such as 'Blood On My Hands' and 'Runaway' show the signature style that fans have come to know and love. The "Dance Revolution" for punk and new new wave has begun and theStart are just the beginning." - Metropolis

6.12.07 FALSE START

We've gotten a few requests to feature these guys. We stumbled across the following bulletin (partial shown) and thought it was a really nice message... so we're sharing it with you.
Partial official bulletin: "Our fans mean the world to us. We wouldn't be here without you and we sincerely care about what's going on in your lives. Music is about reaching out (in my opinion), that's what I've choosen to use this shit to do. To take my own experiences and maybe make a change in someone else's life.
Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last 3 weeks by purchasing our record. Your support means the world to us. 6.11.07 WHY 24/7 SUNGLASSES? OUR BABBLE
I've never understood the whole sunglasses thing with musicians. Perhaps because I am not one! Honestly, I don't think that even Bono quite pulls it off, and if anyone could it would be him.
I wonder what the MAIN motivation is behind wearing sunglasses throughout the day and night, during interviews, etc. Thoughts? -Stacy
Update 6.12.07: Mary G. of Milwaukee suggests that sunglasses may be used to hide signs of drug or alcohol use. Steve Z. of Detroit says it may be due to the lights and glare they see from the stage. Geist of Los Angeles states that shades are important image wise and can't imagine why I can't see that.
Lastly, Yara of Atlanta suggests that since they are such public figures they prefer to keep unshaded eye contact to friends and family. That it is more personal and one of the only things left that the press can't have.
All points are good and appreciated. Thanks, guys!
6.11.07 THE END OF THE CLERKS
Indie / Pop Punk
Official message: "The ClerKs is no more but did not leave us quietly. Before they split, they recorded two exclusive tracks: 'Alarms and Bells' and 'Summer Sun'. A revolution of some kind in The ClerKs' creative world.
A spin, a fall, a metronomic tempo that lead them to the end of a formidable era, individually and as a whole.
MauDite Dance will play these songs live, because they're ace songs and needn't die because The ClerKs is dead. You can listen to them on both myspaces, MauDite Dance's (myspace.com/mauditedance) and The ClerKs' (myspace.com/theclerks).
Thanks for your interest and support of both bands.

We're interested in any drummer who loves and plays punk rock / rock n' roll type stuff.
Must be local to Dallas.
Must have a flexible work schedule to hit the road a lot.
A sense of humor about life and an easy going attitude are a good thing to have as well.
We will need the position filled by the end of the summer. We will be recording an EP shortly thereafter.
Hit us up (myspace.com/deadcityshakers)!" -DCS-
6.8.07 FUTURE OF THE LEFT

6.7.07 OUR BABBLE ON MAGAZINES – PRINT VS ONLINE
I am really aggravated and perplexed that online music magazines often get immediately dismissed by the suits and other industry folk. A few months ago a certain popular DJ named Rodney B. wouldn't answer one question for us because, according to his assistant, "he doesn't speak to webzines."
Our contributing photographer in NY, Mark, couldn't successfully get a press pass the other day to take photos at a show. He said, "Amanda from Warner Bros. (Deftones) said that management denied my press pass because it was for a website. I've never had that happen before." Well, it may be a first time for Mark but this has happened to us before, but it's rare in our overall experience. It didn't matter in the end though, the show has since been cancelled.
There are a handful of other artists & management who won't give us a chance, of course. Oddly, it's mostly been from eighties New Wave bands... who could use a little press.
Hey, they have the right but I find it extremely narrow-minded and ridiculous. This is a free magazine. Free! Sending something off to a printer doesn't make the content different. Except of course, you'd have to add lots of ads to offset the costs. Even so, it's likely that you'd still need to charge something for the publication. Not to mention, you can't click a link and hear instant music clips from a printed magazine. It wouldn't hurt to save a few trees either.
There are benefits to both print and online zines!
As you know, the suits at some labels are use to stickin' it to the musicians by making all the money themselves. Is the idea of something being free to their audiences threatening? Whatever it is, who benefits from this discrimination? Not the musicians! - Stacy

6.6.07 PRESENTING YOUR NEW ADDICTION: NUCULTURES
Down-tempo
Artist: Nucultures
CD: 'Butterflies, Zebras, and Moonbeams'
Label: 1K Recordings
Release Date: August 7, 2007
Official message: "At a time when artists and labels are downsizing, this group of Philadelphia artists have ramped it up and released an ambitious 2 CD set — 'Butterflies, Zebras, and Moonbeams' on 1k recordings. This adventurous collection of music is a kaleidoscope of songs and sound blending shapes and hues with vocals, horns, strings, piano, drum machines, vocal loops, guitars, bass, and left-field electronics into a brilliant textured soundscape of modern pop music.
From three perspectives, lyrically and vocally, 'Butterflies, Zebras, and Moonbeams' delves into questions of love, war, darkness, despair, light, and hope. Musically it’s an eclectic 21 song journey with acoustic guitars ruminating over electronic and tabla beats; the shimmering vocal downtempo tone-poems of Ellie Perez; the dark foreboding jazz of 'Babylon Is Crying'; upright pianos floating over languid grooves of 'Think I’m Losin’ It' and the wind swept desert guitar musings of 'Mind Dunes'.
'Butterflies, Zebras, and Moonbeams' features stellar guest contributions from trumpeter John Swana, cellist Helena Espvall, and Brooklyn drummer Jeremy Carlstedt, among many others."

6.6.07 THE EMERGENCY
Tropical / Psychedelic / Concrete
We love The Emergency's song 'Spending Time' from their new 7" release, 'Spending Time' / 'Switch Me' (Metal Postcard).
The band describes the 7" as "two new songs featuring a lot of homemade and store-bought hand percussion... wasabi pea shakers, half empty bottles of beer, etc. Revolutionary new sound! Can you diggit!?"

6.6.07 OBSOLTETE MACHINES
Other / Indie / Electronica
Partial official description: "Obsolete Machines is a project formed by the members of the Shattercell project. With four years of performing experience, Obsolete Machines has a wide range of emotions and energy levels.
Techno/hip hop rhythms and groove oriented rhythmic bass lines are the emphasis of this project surrounded by ambient effects, electronic wave-forms, raw distorted guitar lines, and chunky piano chords.
We really like their songs 'Isolated' and 'Waiting to Collapse'. The vocals have a slight Adam Levine (Maroon 5) quality, but with more edge.
