7.30.06 PIG REFUNDS FOR HOUSTON

Industrial / Rock / Other

Official message: "Houston Piglets - We have been informed by a few of you that Ticketmaster is not officially honouring refunds for the Houston date. It seems neither the venue or promoter's official word will do, so we'll give them yet another version of the offical word so that Ticketmaster's officially able to give you your official money back, officially.

Thanks for your patience. Keep the hog pits hot. We'll see you next year." Love, PIG

7.29.06 SLOVAK REPUBLIC

Electronica / Pop / Techno

We really like the music we've heard from Slovak Republic so far. What we don't like is their main website. It lacks information and is not user-friendly (although it looks cute as all heck). So, we recommend checking out their MySpace site instead - where you can listen to some great clips.

May we suggest giving a listen to 'Stockholm Exchange' and 'French Kiss Theory'? According to the band's blog, despite these songs being listed as being part of a release named 'I Eat Your Cereal' (2006), these songs aren't new (and were recorded in a living room!).

7.29.06 LANDLORD IS STILL AUDITIONING GUITARISTS

Rock / Alternative / Indie

Official message: "We are pleased to announce a lead/rhythm guitar opening for Landlord. If you are interested in auditioning, please email andres@landlordmusic.com and leave us your contact info, influences and anything else that you see fit. Take a listen to our tunes to give you an idea of our sound and what we are looking for. Landlord are currently comprised of Andres (vocals/bass) and Title (drums). Looking forward!"

Landlord's tracks 'Senator' & '10 Bells' came out earlier this year, on the full-length album 'Glitterati', and kick ass. There's an ever so slight Arcade Fire flavor to them. Check out the music clips here: www.myspace.com/landlord .

7.29.06 GUILD OF FUNERARY VIOLINISTS & THE ROHAN THEATRE BAND

All we can say about the Guild of Funerary Violinists and The Rohan Theatre Band is "fabulous!" For those of you with a dark side, read on...

Guild of Funerary Violinists:

Official description: "Dedicated to the promotion and execution of the art of Funerary Violin, a tradition once placed at the very heart of our notions of mortality but now sadly neglected if not forgotten altogether; the Guild of Funerary Violinists works tirelessly to raise awareness of both the great wealth of music composed to accompany the laying to rest of a tragically departed soul and also the profundity of ritual and symbolism associated with mortality and the Funerary Aesthetic, that seems to be so lacking in the culture of today, where Death is pushed to one side and hidden like some embarrassing family secret. It is only by staring Death in the face that you can truly say you have known Life; it is only by losing that which you hold most dear that you can truly say you have known Love; such is the Art of the Funerary Violinist: NULLUS FUNUS SINE FIDULA."
www.myspace.com/guildoffuneraryviolinists

The Rohan Theatre Band:

Rohan Kriwaczek is the current President of the Guild and is also the founder of The Rohan Theatre Band. He describes his music as Alternative / Folk / Gothic. We highly recommend checking out the songs 'When I'm Gone', 'Snow In Whitechapel', and 'Big Shot'.

7.28.06 STUDENT FILM SHINES

Student Film is an Indie / Pop band that hails from Oklahoma City. Here's an official partial description:

"Herald of heralds, creeper of creepers, the Christ child coos majestically above the inane twitters of barn mice. Since 2003, Student Film has bedazzled local and regional audiences with its atrocious refinement and relentless understatement, combining what is good with what is better: answers with questions, politics with activism, entertainment with art, the theatrical with the cinematic."

We kept replaying their songs 'Crows In Action' and 'Oxycontinental Breakfast'. Bet you'll dig 'em too.

7.26.06 GOOD GOD. THE POEBALL IS GONE!

"POEBALL HAS GONE MISSING!!!!! While all was quiet in POEland, POEBALL (the magnificent Red Soccer Ball with the POE logo on it) continued its travels (albeit-covertly).

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about: A while back, fans decided to send the POEBALL on a world tour, replacing Poe until she's free. The Ball has befriended fans from many walks of life from celebrities and firemen, to Cirque de Soliel characters and cartoonists, to Burning Man hedonists and suburban teens looking for the meaning of life and all have contributed stories and pix to the journal that POEBALL travels with.

Well, all was well until about month ago when POEBALL disappeared in Austin, Texas!!!!!!

The Ballz last host, PJ, victimized by Hurricane Katrina, re-located to Austin and asked us whether POEBALL would hang out with him as he got to know his new home. On Mon, 5 Jun 2006 at 11:19:28, PJ e-mailed us confirming POEBALLz safely arrived and that was the last time we heard from him.

PJ has POEBALL and its journal in his custody and (in essence) all that remains from the last chapter of Psycho/RePoe history. We need it back!!!!!

At this point it is unclear whether this is a kidnapping or whether PJ ran into trouble. As I see it, possible scenarios could be: PJ lost the ball (and is afraid to tell us) in which case we need to help him find it or; PJ was robbed, in which case we need to help him find the perpetrators and retrieve the ball or; he drank too much and forgot he was supposed to send it back (in which case we need to caffeinate him); or he actually kidnapped Poeball!

Either way, we must get to the bottom of this and we need your help!! FYI. This is NOT (I repeat) this is NOT some sort of POEBALL publicity stunt. This is real!!!!!!!!" - Trigger

Poe had a US hit with 'Angry Johnny' in the mid '90s. This message comes from a MySpace page for Poe. Poe does leave messages on it for her fans from time to time. The original message wanted to give out this PJ guy's email but we'd prefer you to just contact Trigger on MySpace if you can help find the Poeball. Listen to 'Angry Johnny' here too.

7.26.06 ABOUT PHILO & THEIR UPCOMING DEBUT

Experimental / Alternative / Progressive

Watch for Philo's debut album, 'Self Destructive In Dark', due out Fall 2006.

Official partial description: "The word PHILO originates from the Greek word philein whos definition is to love This prefix became household name when the originating members of PHILO: Corbin Thomas, Shawn Huff, and Ryan Butcher agreed that there was a lack of true love for music apparent in todays popular industry, artists, and their fans. Something was wrong. Music was no longer about the human experience of a connection. It had become a labeled stamped product and as a product is capable failing to yield a true spiritual connection from artist to fan through music. The popular industry serves music on a silver platter of fabricated lies, and egocentric imagery, in an attempt to raise quick capital at the expense of our youths dreams."

7.25.06 OASIS COLLECTION

Official message: "Oasis have been at the helm of the worlds music scene for over ten years and, on November 20th 2006 the first ever Oasis retrospective will draw together the years of multi platinum albums, Number One singles and, unique to Oasis, instantly familiar B sides into one 18 track double album entitled 'Stop the Clocks'. Furthermore, this collection has been chosen by the band themselves - the songs they believe encapsulate their remarkable career to date.

Oasis are widely regarded as the defining rock n roll band of the last decade, bestriding the music world since the release of debut single, 'Supersonic' in 1994 to the current day whilst claiming a host of records for their own. Second album, 'What's The Story, (Morning Glory)', from which several of the tracks here are drawn, remains the highest ever certified album at 14 x platinum whilst their combined album sales total close to, a remarkable 40 million sales worldwide.

Unlike most albums of this nature, Oasis have sat down and undertaken the almost impossible job of picking what they consider to be their finest moments ever. So 'Stop The Clocks' is imbued with the sort of wilfulness that has helped make Oasis the favourite band of millions of people worldwide and its running order will no doubt provoke equal parts adulation and bar discussions from the millions of Oasis fans worldwide. Could it ever be any other way?

'Stop The Clocks' includes the definitive greatest B side ever, 'Acquiesce', evoking memories of the White Room performance that so many regard as Oasis greatest music television moment. Also present is 'Half The World Away', another B side that became instantly recognisable to all in the UK for its use as the theme music of TVs The Royle Family.

Then come the singles, a stream of contemporary classics starting with 'Supersonic' and moving on to anthems such as 'Wonderwall', as well as more recent moments such as 'The Importance of Being Idle'. These songs explain in an instant why Oasis remain cover stars worldwide as well as being continuously name checked by contemporary bands as their greatest influence.

Having spent 10 months on the road in support of the 2 million selling 'Don't Believe The Truth', 'Stop the Clocks' is released as Oasis take a well earned sabbatical prior to starting work on new material, destined for similar levels of success in the future. As such, this is not a full stop, but merely a time out; a dream set list, and a chance for the world to review the immense contribution that Oasis have made and continue to make to rock n roll. 'Stop The Clocks' - the definitive collection, chosen by the band.

What's your definitive collection?"

7.24.06 THE EMOTRON / THE SITUATIONALS / SETH BOULTON

"Sexy Dance Party"
The Spot on Pecan
Friday, July 28th at 9:00 pm
1212 Pecan Avenue
Charlotte NC
www.TheSpotOnPecan.com

Official message: "Charlotte's (NC) most buzzed-about new venue, The Spot on Pecan (in the location formerly occupied by The Steeple), will present a night of the regions hottest live acts on Friday, July 28th. The bill will consist of The Seth Boulton Band, The Emotron, and The Situationals. This diverse line-up promises to be the most memorable night of music and fun of the summer.

The Emotron is like nothing you've ever seen before. This one-man Spaz Rock genius will have the room losing it in minutes. With music reminiscent of Devo, lyrics reminiscent of The Violent Femmes, and a stage presence reminiscent of absolutely no one, The Emotron brings one of the highest energy shows you've ever seen. Expect crazy costume changes, weirdly wonderful songs, feats of prestidigitation, and perhaps a flaming Speedo. The Emotron is going to be your new favorite.

The Situationals rock it like Blondie getting it on with Talking Heads while Cheap Trick snaps Polaroids. Their Sexy Dance Parties have quickly gained a reputation as Charlotte's hottest shows. Creative Loafings Tim Davis calls them, "an equal mix of pop, post-punk, and college-rock coloring, heavy on the indie-go blue." Amps 11 magazine says, "The Situationals hit the stage with a high energy set that was a mix between present day power pop and early new wave. Fronted by the vivacious Candice Bassett, The Situationals will bring a set of fiery originals including songs from their new EP, 'Heaven is High and The Emperor is Far Away'.

Seth Boulton is a singer-songwriter. Not the folksy kind though. Sounding like David Bowie by way of The Psychedelic Furs, Boulton's songs catch the imagination and rivet the listeners attention. Between the Lines News said, What sets Boulton apart from other sensitive dudes strumming an acoustic guitar is his pairing with North Carolina cellist Nicolette Emanuelle. Her accompaniment adds just the right touch to each piece, often acting as counterweight to Boulton's up-tempo strumming. Newly added percussionist, Laura Witkowski propels the set with her insistent yet quirky rhythms. As their recent jaw dropping set at The Milestone showed, Seth Boulton & The Dream Machine is not to be missed.

With such an exciting roster of talent, the latest Sexy Dance Party will be the most fun you can have. Put on your sexiest outfit, come out to The Spot, and dance the night away."

7.23.06 JORDIS TALKS ABOUT ROCK STAR: SUPERNOVA

Official blog: "I'm guessing a lot of you have been curious as to what I have to say about the new season (Supernova)...

I saw the first show and I think they found some really talented people. I missed the second one... although I might have to look for it because I've been hearing that someone did 'Heart Shaped Box' and my curiousity is killing me.

In all honesty, it is really weird for me to watch. It brings back all those feelings of unbelievable stress and excitement... it's hard to explain. I do sort of find it amusing to watch from the outside now, knowing how the whole thing works.

Well, that's it really... I guess I don't really have too much to say about it, maybe eventually I will, but right now that's all I've got." - Jordis

7.20.06 SUGARCULT MESSAGE

Official message: "Hello Rock-n-Roll Deviants!!... Tim here. I am glad to announce that I am writing this e-mail from the bowels of an Airport in Maui, Hawaii and when I finish I'll be 30,000 feet above the water. After five years of road tear, studio funk, and bad behavior, I decided to take a vacation and pray for forgiveness in the middle of the Pacific. I lounged at beaches, snorkled with turtles, rode a bike down a huge volcano and chickened-out diving off a waterfall (scared of heights). I also watched some 40 thousand people listen to our single 'Do it Alone' on our Myspace player in a matter of hours!! It's good to know that when I'm gone the Sugarcult machine still continues to take over your brain, one cell at a time!

This week we embark on some serious marathon band practices. Band practice; the ritual in which we see who can turn up the loudest takes place in a rehearsal room south of the Los Angeles skyline. Even Kenny has joined in on the loudness by setting up microphones inside his bass drum.

It is in this magical cave where we explore the infinite space, tighten up old songs, new songs, no songs and sing alongs. The challenge at practice right now is deciding which sounds were going to re-create using studio techniques live and which ones were gonna rock out like knuckle heads chugging six packs at the county dump. We really look forward to putting the new show together and seeing all of you animals at the shows!

In other news (beep-beep-beep) we just finished shooting a video for 'Do it Alone'. It's being edited as we speak! This process takes awhile. Airbrushing five thousand frames of my chest hair is no easy task. We shot it with a great guy named Brett Simon. He directed some awesome videos for The Killers, Sum 41, The Walkmen, etc. I just got the rough-cut of it yesterday online and it looks really cool. We shot it in the same building where they filmed the movie Saw. It was a really dark somewhat creepy old run-down space with very ornate wallpaper, tile and fixtures and dirty toilets. There were two wild beat-up alley cats on the property meowing and giving free stare downs. It lasted all day and the end result should be nothing short of entertaining. Who wouldn't want to stare at Marko in tight trousers for three minutes! We will be posting more news as lazy is no longer an option. See you at my BBQ." Sincerely, Tim

*New single now playing on MySpace page. New album out 9/12. Tour tickets now going on sale.

A great deal of people think this is MY band. I'm very disappointed at this assumption! Everything we've done was always a collaborative effort and I can't see any one above the other.

If all goes well, we'll have a new single out in the near future." - Nina (The Cardigans)

7.15.06 SUIT OF LIGHTS

Rock / Indie / Alternative

Just when you think you've done all your research, heard as much as you can, .. some band sneaks by you and you end up wondering if you know a damn thing at all. Well, Suit Of Lights is one of those bands that are extremely good but very sneaky.

'Waking Up Is Good', 'Goodbye Silk City', & 'Out Of The Running' are fantastic songs. They are also completely different from each other. Call us nuts, seems like there is a "dying" theme to their debut album, 'Suit Of Lights' (Visiting Hours, 2005).

They are going to be your new favorite band!

7.15.06 YOU MUST FAMLIARIZE YOURSELF WITH JG VELLUM

Rock / Indie

All we gotta say is thank God we check all of our e-mail! It may take some time but we do get to it. The point? That's how we found out about her!

JG Vellum describes her music as "full of rage but with good manners." It's some of the best stuff we've heard this year.

'Stalemate' - At one point we were reminded of Mazzy Star.

We hear this polite fury she speaks of with 'Make It Hurt' and 'I'm On Fire', which are especially great tracks.

Leo Ross (Korn, Error) produced her music.

7.14.06 NEW SNOW PATROL VIDEO

Official message: "The second single to be released from Snow Patrol's new album 'Eyes Open', will be the anthemic 'Chasing Cars'.

The track has already reached Number 8 in the US iTunes download chart, after it featured on the season finale of the hit ABC show Grey's Anatomy and now looks set to storm radio stations all over the US.

Originally written as a love song, 'Chasing Cars' took on new meaning as the soundtrack to the tangled web of relationships in the last scene of the Grey's Anatomy series finale. There is a new video for 'Chasing Cars' that features scenes from Grey's Anatomy. Watch it now at music.yahoo.com/video/default.asp?

7.13.06 SCARLING. (FEATURES JESSICKA OF JACK OFF JILL FAME)

Official message: "Hello, Another month passes and another batch of tour dates are scheduled. Yes, yes... We know- we've been avoiding the United States like the plague recently but until our current "president" is impeached - it's safer overseas for people like us. How the hell are we going to get our gay marriage on.. huh? ( we kid -we kid - but not really!)

But enough of our piratical political ramblings- we're here to talk about something important. Depeche Mode!!!! That's right you heard it here first (or perhaps you read our myspace a few weeks ago- either way NOW you KNOW). Scarling. will be opening two of the Depeche Mode dates..... That's right it's true!" - Scarling.

"Scarling. make dark, desperate, chaotic, gorgeous pop music, the sound of the end of the world. And I love it." - Robert Smith, the Cure

7.13.06 MUTE MATH BLOG

Official message: "Don't Rorget to Femember. We in Mute Math are an awfully sentimental lot, always talking about where we were one, two, three years ago at this time in the year.

I went to the Wal-Mart in Marshfield, Missouri for the last time yesterday. My Mom bought me some generic neosporin because I cut my fingers up while playing at the Cornerstone Festival (seriously Darren, use sticks). Next week they are moving to a bigger building out by where I use to take bowling lessons.

What's the big deal, all Wal-Marts are the same right? No, you don't understand. This is my Wal-Mart. It was the 74th Wal-Mart in the franchise. It's the Wal-Mart where my grandpa Dewey used to go talk and smoke with his friends and where my babysitter Amber worked. Amber, I am very sorry about all of the times I locked you out of the house, and if you still have that large crescent shape scar on your forehead from when I threw one of my American Gladiators toys at you, well I'm really sorry about that as well.

I walked around my old school late at night under a full moon, home to some treasured memories from kindergarten all the way through high-school, just remembering. Some of the worst and best things that ever happened to me happened right there, right across the street from my Mom's house. I got picked on a bunch, but I picked on other kids as well.

So while I'm apologizing, sorry "Dan, Dan, Muffin Man" as I called you, your military Mom was way too mean to be a cub scout leader but I shouldn't have taken it out on you, and Garrett I'm sorry that I laughed when they stuffed you in a locker, and Donald I'm sorry for perpetuating the rumor that your Mom stopped by every recess to breastfeed you, that was uncalled for. And to all of you that might have ever kicked, punched, slapped, kneed, or set aflame to me: I'm okay, don't worry. I think I'm okay. It's just that now 24 years old, I have a hard time admitting that this much of my life actually has happened and much of it without my permission.

Sometimes, when I walk around Springfield these days, I get recognized by people I don't know. I even saw a Mute Math bumper sticker on a car at the movie theater. I was amazed. I have to admit that all the attention feels good. So thanks, Springfieldians for being so kind to me.

Mom, Dad, Clint, Kristi, Murlene, Merlin, Jill, my nieces and nephews, Chris and Lauren, Ingalls Family, Cornerstone, Jeremy, Jeff, and Grandma, you are my family and friends. Warped tour starts tomorrow, wish us well.

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past." Isaiah 43:18

"Remember the former things, those of long ago." Isaiah 46:9

For a better consideration of what it feels like to go home and remember getting picked on listen to the song 'Another Sweet Summer's Night On Hammer Hill' by Jens Lekman (from the album,'Oh You're So Silent Jens'). It's a wonderful song so go swoop it up alright?

Also, Danielson played a spectacular show in Springfield at Randy Bacon's photography studio. It was pretty great of he and his family to do a show in our little city. He has a new album out, always good.

"Always something there to remind me." thubba du dum dum ba doom (in my mind 80's drums go "thubba do dum dum").

Anyhows, I hope to see all of you in your respective cities as soon as possible." - Darren

7.12.06 SEABOUND FORCED TO CANCEL US TOUR

Official message: "We deeply regret to inform you that Seabound will not be able to join Covenant on their Skyshaper North America tour scheduled for this fall. The reason for this unfortunate turn of events first and foremost lies in the responsibility of the booking agency in the US. A series of organizational failures and miscommunication led to the point when a change of booking agents became the only reasonable action. The inevitable consequence is that the tour is now being postponed, maybe for just a couple of weeks, maybe for longer. As a result, Martin and Frank are no longer able to be part of the tour, because of obligations in their day jobs.

This was devastating news for the band, too, because Seabound were very committed to play this tour and were eager to present their latest as well as brand-new material to their North American fans and friends. Hopefully, there will be another possibility to come over soon. We are already discussing new options and will inform you once the new developments take shape. For the time being, stay tuned for news about Covenant's Skyshaper tour that will eventually take place with a substitution for Seabound in the support line-up."

So check back soon.

But on to the news of the day!

The final dates of the Get Happy Tour have been announced.

OK- so next Friday, July 14 is Chris' big hometown show in Cape May, New Jersey. It's a benefit concert for Chris' high school's music department. AOF is putting the show on themselves and all the bands on the tour will be there!

Cape May is at the bottom of Jersey and is an easy trip for anyone in the NY, NJ, PA, MD, DE, DC area. It's resort town beach town and the show is gonna be at the school in their new performing arts center- pretty snazzy. After the show there will be an official after party for anyone over 21 at the Ugly Mug in Cape May- all the bands should be stopping by for it.

So we know what you're thinking- sounds awesome but I live in (fill in the blank)...

Here's the deal even if you can't attend the show- please help the cause and buy a ticket or make a donation online at www.mrjsmusicshop.com.

If you purchase a ticket but cant make the show - email chris@armyoffreshmen.com with your name and address and he'll make sure it goes to a less fortunate kid who otherwise couldn't attend the show.

*** Besides helping a great cause- we'll throw in an autographed postcard from the road. ***

Thanks in advance for your help on this and please visit WWW.MRJSMUSICSHOP.COM for more info on the show, the cause, directions, hotels and to purchase tickets." Your putting on a benefit homies, Chris, Aaron, Owen, Dan, Kai, Mike (Army Of Freshman)

7.9.06 CHECK OUT WIRED ALL WRONG

Official message: "Hey Everybody! I just finished mixing this awesome new band called Wired All Wrong. The band is Jeff Turzo from God Lives Underwater and Matt Mahaffey from Self.

These 2 geniuses have put together the most rockin breakbeats, heavy gtrs and crazy vocals (think Beck meets Failure with the BeeGees singing background vocals). They are absolutely my favorite rock band right now. So if your looking for the new and fresh get on it. I feel like I'm at McDonalds cause I'm lovin' it!" - Sean Beavan 8mm

We checked them out and especially think the track, 'Nothing At All' is awesome. We heard a tiny smidgen of MSI in it, a mellow MSI, and we adore MSI! Hey, don't foget to visit the 8mm page too. They're very worthy as well! -Babble and Beat

7.8.06 VOLTAIRE CREATOR QEE FIGURES!

Official message: "I've talked about them in my most recent blog ("Voltaire in San Diego") and now, the "Voltaire Creator Qee Series" figures are in and ready to be sold! Whoo Hoo! You can see these little buggers in my latest blog.

They are about 3 inches tall, have 7 points of articulation (8 if you count the hair coming off! lol!) and um.. they look like me. Well, at least one of them does ("Voltaire Creator Qee-Original Color"), the rest of them (from left to right in the photo) are weird variations called Undead, Evil, Devil, Mecha and Toxic.

I will be signing these at San Diego Comic Con, but if you are not going to be anywhere near there you can still pick up at least a few of these directly from me.

Here's the deal. The original color version and the Devil version (that's the one with black clothes and red skin) are the only ones that come in bulk and those are $10 each.

The rest of them are much harder to find and will be "Blind Packed" at Comic Con meaning that you won't see what you're buying until you buy it, open up the package and look inside.

I have plenty of the Original Color and Devil figures to sell, but far less of the variants.

TOXIC (actually a white glow in the dark plastic rather than that weird translucent green material shown in the photo) and EVIL ( red clothes, white skin) are short-packed (only a few per case) so I have very few of those. Those are $20 each.

And the other two, UNDEAD (purple skin) and MECHA (silver skin) are nearly impossible to find (only one per case!) so I can't sell those at all!

So, what do you do if you want one of these little suckers?

1) Go to www.paypal.com

2) Hit SEND MONEY and send me the correct amount of funds for what you are ordering.

3) Again, here are the prices: Creator Qee Original Color: $10, DEVIL version- $10, TOXIC Glow in the Dark Version- $20, and EVIL version- $20.

4) Shipping is included in the prices.

5) My paypal account is voltaire(AT)voltaire.net. Replace the (AT) with the usual symbol.

6) Make sure you tell me which figures you are ordering in the note section and make sure you give me your shipping address.

7) ALL FIGURES COME SIGNED and with a free 4x5inch Voltaire sticker!

You can see the picture of these figures in my latest blog. If you have any questions, post them in my San Diego blog and I will reply directly to you. Cheers!" -Voltaire

7.8.06 SERENA MANEESH

Rock / Psychedelic / Gothic

Part of official description: "Norwegian Serena Maneesh present their self-titled, full-length debut 'Serena Maneesh' with eleven songs that slide down a razor’s edge of distortion and pop whimsy, raucous guitar work and underwater static, angelic voices and primal screams. The strange melodies are strikingly original, yet they strike to the heart of something familiar: a classic rock guitar lick, a wound, a kiss.

Inspired by everything from Southern blues via Neu! to Gershwin, 'Serena Maneesh' is as much about exploring sound as crafting song. Working in both horizontal and vertical layers, head musician Emil Nikolaisen creates tuneful paradoxes, infinite yet time-bound. His meticulous compositions balance whispery female vocals and underlying violin with driving guitar rock, distorted samples, and chant-like repetition. Tracks such as 'Sapphire Eyes' begin and end in liquid noise; in between guitars shriek and shatter, angels sing, and a snare beats along in cinque-pace time.

'Serena Maneesh' was completed in half a year in various cities such as Chicago, (at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studio), Oslo, New York City and Stockholm. For the album, mixed by, among others, Martin Bisi (Swans, Sonic Youth), Nikolaisen employed several of his sisters (Elvira and Hilma), friends (Sufjan Stevens and Daniel Smith of the Danielson Famile), and solid Serena musicians Lina Holström on female vocals, Eivind Schou on violin, Sondre Tristan Midttun on guitar, and Tommy Akerholdt on drums, among others." -Melissa Riches

Genika
Sinewave

James 'Trek-e' Smith

Location:
Sonar Nightclub
66 Water Street
Vancouver BC
Canada

Doors: 8pm
Info: 604 683-6695
Tickets: $10

Official message: "We are excited about the fantastic lineup that has come together for this show! The first band, Phontaine, will kick of the show with a blend of funky breaks and acoustic instruments - to produce a warm, smooth, electronic sound that is nostalgic, fresh and down-tempo. Following Phontaine will be Sinewave: trippy, progressive space lounge, with melodic songwriting sophistication. After Sinewave comes the beautiful sounds of Genika - moving the evening into a mood that is ethereal and haunting, emotional and optimistic, yet dark and cathartic; a perfect transition for Au4 to step in right after. The night will round out with James 'Trek-e' Smith with a 'sure to be fantastic' DJ set. Be sure to make it to Sonar by 8:30 pm - as these are sets that you won't want to miss!

Tickets will be sold at the door, but we recommend that you purchase tickets at the Au4 Store until midnight tonight, as each band has been pre-selling tickets and Au4 wants to make sure that all their fans have the chance to be at this exciting event. Tickets purchased online will be available at will-call with purchaser's photo ID only. For more information contact IMU Productions or phone: 604 683-6695.

This CD Release Party promises deliver a live show of greater magnitude than Au4's last - with refined visuals and new stage décor provided by En4. Drummer/brother Nathan Wylie has finally returned from a two-month tour - glad to have him back for his first show with Au4! To get a taste of what you missed at the Au4 debut show at the Plaza in April, be sure to check out the photos in the "...shows..." section of the official Au4 website."

7.4.06 JOE STRUMMER FILM OUT ON DVD NOW

'Let's Rock Again!' is now available on DVD!

Official description: "'Let's Rock Again!' is a one-hour music documentary following rock icon Joe Strummer as he tours across America and Japan with his band The Mescaleros. After a montage of Strummer's glorious past with the seminal rock band The Clash, we are treated to a slice of life eleven years later on the comeback trail. Strummer's main objective is simple -- to get his music out to the people and break his record even so that he can have another chance to rock again. This is achieved through photo shoots, magazine interviews and press appearances.

In his humble quest, we even see Joe handing out flyers on the boardwalk and making a blind visit to a radio station in order to get his latest cd on the air and attract fans to his concert. Live performances feature songs from The Clash as well as material written with his new band, The Mescaleros.

Part of the daily excitement of life on the road includes hanging out with celebrities backstage and taking the time to give every fan his due respect. A live studio recording is also featured in the mix. As the film unfolds we begin to see that Strummer's goal is being met. This is complimented by his philosophical waxing on life, music and the lessons he has learned along the way. More importantly, however, is the intimate portrait depicted. For all of his fame, the life of Strummer has always been that of a genuine working-man. He is a salt of the earth guy following his passion with 100% effort, and this above all, makes him the true hero he is.

'Let's Rock Again!' was produced by Strummer and director Dick Rude who is also responsible for the seminal work Repo Man. His 17 year friendship with Strummer, and Los Angeles upbringing create the crossroads where London and LA punk meet. Strummer's cooperation and comfort with Rude opened the door to an exclusive view of the legendary man never before seen. At the close of 2002, the world lost Joe to a congenital heart condition. 'Let's Rock Again!' is his final message, a story about never giving up."

7.3.06 NEW TV ON THE RADIO OUT TODAY

Official 4AD message: TV On The Radio's kaleidoscopic and addictive new album 'Return To Cookie Mountain' is released today.

'Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes', which came out in 2004 - established TVOTR as one of the most exciting and genuinely innovative bands to have emerged from the American musical underground in years. That record earned them the Shortlist Prize - the US equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize - and a devoted global fanbase thrilled by the band's unique sound - a dizzying blend of post-rock, soul, New York new wave and deep dub.

And if 'Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes' - with its moody textures and refusenik lyrics - was a monochrome question mark, the follow-up is an technicolour exclamation mark. Recorded at the band's own Stay Gold studio in Brooklyn, it's a thrilling sugar-rush - colourful, inventive, wildly ambitious and genuinely celebratory. It's packed with the kind of intuitive moves that few other bands could even imagine, never mind pull off, from the psychedelic, sample-drenched 'I Was A Lover', to the radiant ascent of 'Province', to the euphoric break-down and build-up of the truly feral single-to-be 'Wolf Like Me'.

'Return To Cookie Mountain' features a guest appearance from self-confessed TVOTR fan David Bowie as well as labelmates Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead) and Katrina Ford (Celebration), not to mention contributions from much of Brooklyn's musical community. And the reviews in the UK have been overwhelmingly positive :

"a delight - an experimental album with a pop heart" The Guardian (4/5)

"spellbinding ... wonderful" Observer Music Monthly (4/5)

"evidence of fearless imaginations at play, Cookie Mountain is a triumph of psychedelic melody, drone and eerie groove" Mojo (4/5)

"more than deserving of your worshipful attention. Hallelujah !" Time Out (5/6)

"excellent ... an album full of playful daring" Q (4/5)

"ceaselessly inventive and tuneful" The Observer

"underlying it all is a glorious pop sensibility" Independent On Sunday (4/5)

TV On The Radio will be back in Europe in August, playing at festivals all over the continent.
