1.31.07 NEW LCD SOUNDSYSTEM

Punk / Funk / Disco House

LCD Soundsystem's 'North American Scum' will be released February 26th.

According to their official website: "Holy crap. Our website sucks. Sorry about the past few years of this garbage. It totally blows... but we're making a new one to go with the new record."

1.31.07 CALLA

Out February 20th:

"Calla 'Strength In Numbers' [Beggars Banquet]: The intense, brooding and emotional soundscape of Calla is a product of the diverse environments in which it is forged. No record reflects this more than 'Strength In Numbers', the band's second album on Beggars Banquet after the critically acclaimed 2005 album, 'Collisions'.

While 'Collisions' was driven out of the Calla's raw live sound, Aurelio Valle (vocals, guitar), Wayne Magruder (drums) and Peter Gannon (bass guitar) had more ambitious goals for 'Strength In Numbers'. The album combines all aspects of their past work: the experimental, the live and distorted, the odd and the beautiful. From their home in Brooklyn, to their roots in Texas, 'Strength In Numbers' represents the amalgamation of a band's experiences." - Beggars Banquet
Listen to the 'Sanctify' mp3:

"EXTRA EXTRA FOR NEW YORKERS: The 'Strength In Numbers' Record Release Party is on February 15th at Annex (152 Orchard Street)."

1.31.07 TIMES ARE CHANGING - QUICK BABBLE

I was watching TV last night when I saw the new M&M candies commercial featuring The The's 'This Is The Day'. I was stunned - even though I realize it's a fairly popular tune...

Oh, but the real shocker came this evening. I most seriously became a victim of whiplash after hearing the Buzzcocks song 'Everybody's Happy Nowadays' in the latest AARP commercial (and yes, it was their version)! "AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for people age 50 and over." Who says being over 50 isn't hip???

1.30.07 MOTHER AND THE ADDICTS

Alternative / Garage / Other

Official statement: "Mother and the Addicts have completed their second album 'Science Ficton Illustrated' (Chemikal Underground Records), set for release in the spring. Exclusive tracks will be available soon. A return to the stage is imminent."

1.30.07 NEW ANDI SEX GANG

Gothic / Acoustic / Alternative

Official statement from Andi Sex Gang in regards to 'Inventing New Destruction' which will be released on February 28th:

"The second installment of a trilogy of new albums. Written and recorded in Berlin, and featuring 11 new songs plus a bonus edit track.

Co-produced with arthouse dj and mixer Ragnar, this album also features Sex Gang cohorts Matthew Saw and Kevin Matthews, plus Brian Eno band members Leo Abrahams and Tim Harries."

If it's anything like his 'The Madman in the Basket' (2006) release, we are in for a real treat!

1.30.07 GIRL IN A COMA TO PLAY CHICAGO (IL)

Alternative / Rock / Indie

Official partial description: "Female rock trio Girl in a Coma formed in San Antonio, Texas in 2001. Their first show at Sin13 that same year left their audience in awe of the group's extraordinary sound (courtesy of childhood friends Jenn Alva on bass and Phanie D. on drums) and Nina Diaz's jaw-dropping vocals, which have been compared to those of Bjork and Patsy Cline."

Official statement: "We will be supporting The Pogues at Congress Theater in Chicago, IL... More soon!" XX
At this time we're not certain if they are playing the March 5th show or the March 6th show (or both)? Check their website for updates.

1.29.07 INKLING

Rock / Pop / Alternative

"We're all from other bands. We WILL be fired if they find out we are conspiring and playing together. Therefore, as much as we would like, we aren't allowed to gig this music... but one day, if we can drum up enough support virtually, we can leave our crummy bands and make this a real band." - Inkling

Although that seems to be true they do have a street team and a building following. We certainly hope they're working on a cd! Their song, 'Secret Fear' sends chills down our spines - it's amazing! 'It's Not Me It's You' is a really great song as well.

1.26.07 PAINTED SAINTS

Indie / Folk / Other

Partial official description: "Painted Saints hail from Denver / Minneapolis and subscribe themselves to a spaghetti western - gypsy - chamber - country - sad bastard school of music. They write tin can and twine romances in a color of rust with backdrops of long, wind swept open roads framed by tangled barbed wire and naked telephone poles."

'Cardboard and Silence' is an absolutely brilliant tune! Check it out by visiting: myspace.com/paintedsaints.

1.25.07 THE WEST MEMPHIS THREE - GUILTY OF MURDER BECAUSE THEY'RE, WELL, GOTHS?

Being Gothic or wearing black is not a crime but in Memphis it gets you death...

"If you don't know about the WM3 please click on this banner (see link at bottom) and learn. It is a cause very dear to my heart and everyone should be aware of what is going on here!!" - Mia Tyler

Per the official website: "Shortly after three eight-year-old boys were found mutilated and murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas, local newspapers stated the killers had been caught. The police assured the public that the three teenagers in custody were definitely responsible for these horrible crimes. Evidence?

The same police officers coerced an error-filled “confession” from Jessie Misskelley Jr., who is mentally handicapped. They subjected him to 12 hours of questioning without counsel or parental consent, audio-taping only two fragments totaling 46 minutes. Jessie recanted it that evening, but it was too late— Misskelley, Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols were all arrested on June 3, 1993, and convicted of murder in early 1994.

Although there was no physical evidence, murder weapon, motive, or connection to the victims, the prosecution pathetically resorted to presenting black hair and clothing, heavy metal t-shirts, and Stephen King novels as proof that the boys were sacrificed in a satanic cult ritual. Unfathomably, Echols was sentenced to death, Baldwin received life without parole, and Misskelley got life plus 40.

For over 13 years, The West Memphis Three have been imprisoned for crimes they didn’t commit. Echols waits in solitary confinement for the lethal injection our tax dollars will pay for. They were all condemned by their poverty, incompetent defense, satanic panic and a rush to judgment.

But there’s still hope for them, and you can help."

1.24.07 UPDATE FROM THE CONCRETES

Official message: "Hello there dear friends, A quick note to let you know that contrary to popular belief The Concretes site is alive and kicking. As of just now, there's a brand new Concretes song to be enjoyed. The song is called 'Oh No' and it is taken from the upcoming album, 'Hey Trouble.' We do hope you will like it.

More on release dates, more new songs etc., soon. In the meantime, we leave you with 'Oh No' and nothing, oh no, nothing, but love." The Concretes x

1.24.07 A NEW TRANS AM

Electro / Experimental / New Wave

"After Trans Am’s last album, 'Liberation' – a bleak portrayal of life in a security-obsessed imperial capital – the band exploded and abandoned Washington, D.C. for three different continents."

"With two years’ of separation fueling them, the band began in June 2006 on a program of sporadic rendezvous, reconvening briefly on several continents to work on what would become the most joyous and upbeat rock album of Trans Am’s chronicle." - Thrill Jockey Records

Their new album, 'Sex Change' is scheduled for a February 20th release.

1.24.07 OUR BABBLE

Well, it's off to Howard Jones tonight at Shank Hall. Really looking forward to it. Haven't seen him since Poplar Creek (Illinois) in, well, must have been the mid to late eighties. No surprise that we didn't hear back from the HJ camp in regards to an interview. Do we thing we're NME or something??? No worries, we'll be doing a concert review at least.

UPDATE 1.25.07: CLICK HERE FOR OUR REVIEW

Did you catch those Chips Ahoy (cookies) commercials last year? "Punky Chips Ahoy, oi, oi, oi!" Well, I like a good cracker almost as much as a cookie. So, how about some "Punk Bock Ritz?" A tasty Ritz-brand cracker infused with attitude and a hint of lager flavoring. A play, obviously, on "Punk Rock Blitz." You heard it hear first! Yeah, I'm the only one amused... again. Sorry.

Contest entries more than quadrupled over the last 2 days. I got excited thinking there was a huge rash (the kind you want!) of new readers stopping by. Yes, our readership is growing each month but this is a major spike in traffic. So, in this case I suspect that a sweepstakes site has advertised our current contest... making ours just one of hundreds you can enter all at once with one press of a button.?!? If so, what a friggin bummer . If not, the traffic increase is fantastic! Update: Just as suspected it's due to www.online-sweepstakes.com. Guess I'm going to have to make it tougher to enter next time by asking music questions or something.

Any other instrument skillz, such as a harp, flute, clarinet etc, would also be considered. Word."

1.23.07 DAVID BYRNE (TALKING HEADS)

Here is just a snippet of what David Byrne had to say in regards to the January Carnegie Hall shows:

"It’s a thrill to be able to do a whole concert of new material. Most of my life in concerts and tours I have gingerly mixed in new stuff with songs that are more familiar to an audience, which is what most bands and singers do. Occasionally we get overly enthusiastic and we play a whole new record, or most of it, on tour — our enthusiasm for the new material sometimes overwhelms practical concerns for the desires of our audiences. It’s a balancing act — we don’t want to give them only what they already know (and to be honest they’d get bored with that after a while, as would all of us) but one can only introduce new and surprising elements a little at a time so it becomes a mixing act."

1.22.07 TIN SOLDIER EMPIRE

Industrial / Electro / Screamo

Partial official description: "Early 2005 a legend started. Tin Soldier Empire was born out of the sick and twisted mind of founder Jay Gambit. Raised by Nintendos and Heavy Metal he created one of the most controversial bands in the electrocore scene.

Straying from the local standard of genre-definitions and vowing the perpetual lack of live drums he broke out onto the local music scene with a vengeance. Drawing from influences ranging from Retard-O-Bot and Mindless Self Indulgence to GWAR and Frank Zappa the music was fresh."

We think there's something special in their songs 'Burrito', 'Fuck The Scene', 'Gameboy Romance' (teaser), and 'I Write Sins' (teaser). Check out their music clips by visiting myspace.com/tinsoldierempire. New album due for an April 21st release!

1.19.07 KELLY JONES OF STEREOPHONICS

Indie / Rock

Partial official message: "In between takes of making the new album I began recording some new songs with just an electric guitar. It began as something very off the cuff then within a couple of days, in the early hours, an album consisting of ten songs was finished. Every song is a girl's name and the album is gonna be called 'Only The Names Have Been Changed.'

It's pretty dark, filmic, story based, very mellow and in no means a reflection on the new Stereophonics album. It's sparse, some songs with string arrangements and the voice is way up front in the mix.

The record will be online under my name from Monday 29th January followed by a very limited hard copy release in March. Not enough copies for charts or reviews, it's purely being released as spontaneously as it was recorded.

I'm going to do a small tour in March to play the songs live and am very much looking forward to making a completely mellow, filmic stage environment to do so. So keep ya eyes peeled if ya interested and I will see you on the road!" Love and colours, Kelly x

1.18.07 CLIENT'S ZEROX MACHINE

Client's 'Zerox Machine' will be out Feb. 20th.

"Client is the sexy electro pop trio that hails from sunny England. Their music is a sultry blend of electro clash and new wave reminiscent of Joy Division, Pet Shop Boys, and the Human League."

"The band has found its way to a new North American home, Metropolis Records. To celebrate the new union, Client will be releasing their cover of the Adam and the Ants classic 'Zerox Machine' as a teaser before unveiling their new album in April 2007."

I'm a big fan of the Ants and it seems to me their version was actually just called 'Zerox'.

"The 'Zerox Machine' single features the original cover, along with an exclusive b-side, and four scorching remixes by the likes of Covenant and Jonny Slut. Client is poised for their British invasion of the North American club scene and 'Zerox Machine' is the launch pad they will do it with." - Metropolis

1.16.07 KGC

"KGC (Konietzko, Garcia, Cifarelli) is the brain child of three of the most trail-blazing underground artists around: Dean Garcia the musical genius behind Curve, known for his monolith guitars and layered production style, that envelop the listener with its tsunami of instrumentation, Sascha Konietzko of KMFDM, whose innovative and unorthodox approach toward production have garnered him with international acclaim as one of the foremost pioneers of industrial/ultra heavy beat and Lucia Cifarelli of KMFDM and Drill, whose vocal and lyrical talents go from provocative to menacing in the beat of a rivet-head lovelorn heart.

The three met by chance through a mutual fan. However unlikely it sounds, that was the beginning of a year-long, trans-Atlantic session swap that spawned their debut album, 'Dirty Bomb' (KMFDM Records, 2006). This collaboration of alternative music giants was composed via the web, by trading files back and forth between London and Seattle. The music they birthed pushing sounds over the ether took on a life and presence of its own. 1.15.07 NEW SINEAD O'CONNOR RELEASE THIS SPRING

Official message: "Sinead O'Connor speaks...

An artist who has never been afraid to speak her mind, Sinead O'Connor is putting the finishing touches on her new album which will be released in the Spring. As a message of peace to the world, as this New Year begins, Sinead has made two songs from the upcoming album available as free downloads as well as footage of these songs as performed at a recent show in Dublin.

‘If You Had A Vineyard’ and ‘Jeremiah (Something Beautiful)’ carry a special message of peace and unity. A timely call in these turbulent days for compassion, understanding and reconciliation, in the form of a musical Holiday card from Dublin to the world.

Talking about the inspiration for the seasonal release; Sinead said...

"'If You Had A Vineyard' is a protest song I guess, but it's more of an anti war song. I have always been fascinated with how the books of the prophets relate to things nowadays even though they were written hundreds or thousands of years ago."

"I read Isaiah and took the lines from it that I liked and adapted them so they rhymed etc. My desire was not to use anything that perpetuated the myth of the God character being angry and aggressive."

"I suppose I observe a lot of violence done in the name of theologies of various religions, but when you study the actual texts of those religions you find that they don't back up anyone who might use them to justify war or violence or anything really which is unloving of people."

1.13.07 WHAT'S NEW WITH AUF DER MAUR?

Official blog: "I can see.

Ah the patience...
I have called upon again and again. The gap in time and space between you and my music demands it.

The time to be an independent music maker has descended upon this earth whole heartedly, and I am caught up in the red tape of a monstrous corporation. There are far more profound problems that could be, so I am just sitting back and letting the cards fall where they may. Watching a cold river making cuts across the land, and dreaming up more direct ways to get my creative ideas out there...

2007 will bring new and more immediate ways to share. Computer tricks and a new way of looking at things will do it.

Hello!" xMAdMx (Melissa Auf Der Maur)

1.13.07 THE GREAT BOZ BOORER

Official blog: "Hi everyone, I haven't done one of these blog things for a while. It's been a great week, I spent it in New Orleans mixing an album, did some dj ing last saturday at One Eyed Jacks, took in 3 brass bands at Tippertina's, saw Joe play solo at the Circle Bar, saw Gal Holiday at Bank's, nearly had a tattoo, even saw a bar brawl at the Saint bar and I laughed a lot!

But now I'm in Vegas, DJing tonight at the Beauty Bar courtesy of Johnny and Ozzy, there's a great band on too, The Idyllists. I'm also spinning at the Beauty Bar in San Diego on the 17th, La Rumba in Denver on the 19th and the Rogue bar in Phoenix on the 20th - that place sounds familiar, maybe the Polecats played there a while back. So if anyone fancies it COME ON DOWN!

After that I don't doubt I'll do a spot at the Underground some time in the next few weeks. That's at the Tempest Club, on Santa Monica on Friday nights - all ages too. Many thanks to all involved, all the cats, you know who you are." Cheers.....BB (Boz Boorer)

1.11.07 BLOODPIT NEWS

Rock

Official message: "Bloodpit has happily joined forces with Sony BMG. In future, the music of the band will be released through Sony BMG, under the Beemvees-label of Merceedees Tuotanto. For Bloodpit, the choice between an indie and major record label has always been difficult.

"Now we get to combine the best parts of both. We were finally convinced of Sony BMG's good intentions because of the managers, who visited us and proved to be everything but a faceless machine. It feels great to continue recording the album when one knows for certain that everything functions in the best possible way in the background!", says Matthau.

"At the moment, Bloodpit is one the most potential Finnish rock bands and it is truly great to collaborate with them", says Kimmo Valtanen, Managing Director of Sony BMG Finland. "Bomfunk MC's and HIM were once broken through Sony and BMG's organizations, and Lordi was last year's biggest success story. For Bloodpit, Sony BMG intends to create a setting for similar kind of domestic and international success."

The forthcoming weekend, Bloodpit will perform at Eurosonic Festival in the Netherlands. The band has already begun recording their second album with the producer Janne Joutsenniemi, and the album is to be released in Finland in the spring. The album will be mixed by Jyrki Tuovinen and Hiili Hiilesmaa. The first single should in all likelihood be released in March."

1.09.07 THE SORE

Punk / Hardcore

Official message: "We have quite some things planned for 2007. We will make our merch available worldwide, we are planning on touring and recording and so much more. Just bear with us, this is a diy band, so we put all our own money into the band without any support from a fancy label or so. The pro is that this way we can keep on making uncompromised hc/punk music and have a good time with the music that makes us happy. The con is that some things might take a little longer in The Sore's universe.

Anyway, we want to thank EVERYONE out there for supporting us, for listening to the music, for wearing the shirts and generally for spreading the word. You are the band, we are you, it´s all one thing." - Peter Sore, Hollywood Hofa and the rest of the army that is The Sore.

1.15.07 Antique Smashing Pumpkins:

Here's a couple of things I didn't know about D'arcy Wretzky, formerly of The Smashing Pumpkins:

"Since leaving the band, D'arcy has been living in Watervliet, Michigan. She owns a horse farm and three antique shops." - Wikipedia

Ok, I am sure I have been to at least one of her antique shops then. I used to be an antiques dealer but I kept all my purchases; it wasn't a very profitable avenue for me!

1.15.07 Tool's Adam Jones:

Happy birthday to Adam Jones of Tool. He was born 42 years ago in Illinois.

We understand he grew up in Libertyville. I wonder if he's ever been to Mickey Finn's Brewery / Restaurant. It's one of our favorite establishments in the Chicago suburbs!

The scheduled release is early April (exact date tbc) with a new single ‘Keep It In The Family’ scheduled for release in March (again, exact date tbc). Keep the faith." Love, Wayne

1.12.07 Endless Hallway:

Rock

Official message: "Finishing writing our record, which as promised will not dissapoint the highest expectations. Joe has laid down some of the drum tracks. Toppled is a steam train goliath teetering on the edges of the track. Mullen is a monster for sure.

It all comes down to figuring out what it is you really want and remembering what you wanted before the context changed. We want to be the villian, and you to be the hero." - Ryan (Endless Hallway)

Alternative / Experimental / Psychedelic

Official message: "Giant Paw are looking to put together their next couple of card / cd releases... any artists who fancy collaborating with us, please drop us a line. Unfortunately, as it's a self funded shoestring project, there won't be any cash involved (unless something weird happens 'natch).

The recordings are underway and the releases are pencilled in for spring '07.

We are looking to release two cards initially and will contact those interested with mixes of the tracks to get their creative juices flowing... also in the pipeline is a set of Giant Paw Trading Cards, which we envisage as featuring art by many different artists."

Punk / Psychedelic / Rock

1.5.07 "Goth Stan" (South Park):

I was on the Toys R Us website the other day trying, unsuccessfully, to find Voltaire's "Pocket Goths". Instead, I found a "Goth Stan" - little Stan from South Park in black & dark grey clothing. He's cute as hell!

Check him out by visiting toysrus.com. This picture shows a cane - I haven't figured out what a cane has to do with "Goths" or Stan yet. However, it also comes with a cup of coffee and a book. Notice the silver-colored cross earring. Cute.

1.5.07 Newer Music Site To Check Out:

Have you checked out ReverbNation yet? It seems to still be in its infancy, like us, and features many different types of music.

You can listen to full music clips, like you can on MySpace... it's way smaller in size than them but showcases a lot of bands that aren't on MySpace.

    THE HOUSEMARTINS
         London 0 Hull 4

The Housemartin's 'London 0 Hull 4' album was originally released in 1986 (Go! Discs Ltd). I instantly loved this cd when it was released. You may recall their more popular tunes 'Happy Hour' & 'Sheep'. Other favorites of mine are 'Sitting On A Fence', 'Over There', 'Think For A Minute', 'We're Not Deep', 'Anxious', and 'Freedom'. Guess I have a lot of "favorites"! Their version of 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' is beautiful, as well as their track 'Flag Day'.

What are they up to now? Paul Heaton (vocals & harmonica) went on to form The Beautiful South. Their most recent release is 'Superbi' (2006).

According to his official website, Stan Cullimore (guitar) has written over 80 novels! Some of his work includes a few children's books series, like Henrietta & Mai Ling! He's also done some children's television work, like Spider and Fly (a Nicktoons TV short). UPDATE 1.26.07 - We recently asked Stan, "What made you stop playing music and completely focus on writing and TV?" Stan answered, "The pleasure of the new and unknown!"

Hugh Whitaker (drums) became a member of The Penny Candles, The Juniper Chute, and Percy.

Norman Cook (bass) went on to form Beats International, Freakpower, and then Fatboy Slim. Yes, Fatboy Slim!
