2.28.07 FOR FUN, SOME COVER SONGS
Personally, I am usually disappointed in cover songs and have no use for them. One cover that makes me cringe is Cary August's version of 'Bizarre Love Triangle' (New Order).
I KNOW, I KNOW. Odd coming from someone who seems so open to so many types of music, right? Perhaps I get emotionally attached to the originals, not sure.
Here are a couple of examples that are quite different from the originals - the kind of covers I approve of and tend to enjoy much more. Stacy

2.19.07 OUR BABBLE
Well, my day job is taking me to Illinois until Friday. I will not have access to a computer during my training and hotel stay! Unless I want to pay $10 every 15 minutes. Nah. I really need to get a laptop - but that costs even more money so I don't see that happening either! Since I will be computerless, Wednesday's and Thursday's news will be late. Sorry
So, what really bites about my trip is I will not be able to see Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) at UWM (Milwaukee, WI) tonight. Very envious that my husband is going. At least one of us can. He assures me he will take notes for Babble and Beat. Update 3.20.07 – so much for that, still waiting. One of the best moments EVER on TV was when he went face to face with Tipper Gore on Eleanor Mondale's show many years ago. It was something to see indeed!
Why is it that new releases (cds &/or the jackets) are often no longer labeling the year of release on them? I have sooo many cds from this year and last year that do not indicate anywhere the year in which they were released. I wonder what the reasoning is behind that.

Though it's likely to never be seen again, we're offering a huge reward worth over $500 for its return. If anyone is so generous and wishes to make donations for gear replacement, you can do so through PayPal to process42@process42.net ."

UPDATE:
"It's been since the Feb. 2nd that the $3,000 in gear was stolen and the only things we've heard are the venue security is shady and they're notorious for this type of shitz.
We're looking into setting up some benefit shows for our guitarist in the meantime, but what'd really help for now is getting people to the shows we're setting up. Next one is March 3rd near Cleveland (Ohio) if you've got friends out that way, pass it along. :) Thanks again!" - ju5+1n6.7 of process42

2.13.07 NEW FROM THE EARLY YEARS
"The Early Years have been on the radar for a while but are still relative newcomers on the scene. Having signed to Beggars Banquet early last year, they wasted no time in putting out two limited singles and an outstanding self-titled debit album, which Drowned In Sound praised for its "noisy majesty", NME labelled "an explosion of unbridled sonic pleasure" and Artrocker decreed to be most definitely "the right side of prog."
19th February sees the release of a brand new EP 'The Great Awakening' featuring 'Say What I Want To' plus three other previously unreleased tracks. 'Say What I Want To' became a firm live favourite towards the tail-end of 2006 and the band are back out on tour in February.

2.13.07 SAM ROSENTHAL'S POD PROJEKT
Official message: "To announce the release of my electronic-ambient-space-music side-project, 'As Lonely As Dave Bowman', I’ve created this ultra-limited edition version available only from Projekt.com:
http://projekt.com/projekt/product.asp? sku=PRO00195L">http://projekt.com/projekt/
product.asp?sku=PRO00195L
POD will be released on February 20th as an audio-CD in a DVD-sized digi-pak in a limited hand-numbered first edition of 900 (hand-numbered by me, Sam). Today, we have available the ultra-limited edition, only 36 are for sale. It’s the audio-CD in the digi-pak inside a blue plexiglass box. The cost is $31.98. The limited edition numbers are 15 through 50. A few have already been sold, so act fast!
POD brings a new and chilling element to the ambient music genre known as drone. Inspired by the vast isolation of cold, dark space, the absence of human civilization, and the texture of pure sound, there is a curiosity and fascination with those forces that leads to discovery. 'As Lonely as Dave Bowman' becomes a pioneer in the next stage of ambient drone. With a chillingly isolated core of sound that detaches and draws back into itself like droplets of mercury, POD crafts a singular sound of metaphoric loneliness that is not just a strand that drifts through space but is an enveloping, permeating cloud. It travels in an infinite trajectory, exploring the realm of the unknown as if a breathing entity, expanding and contracting into eternity. It eventually evolves into a robotic drone, a swarm of emotion and memory." - Sam Rosenthal

2.12.07 THE 49TH GRAMMY AWARDS & DOING COVERS - OUR BABBLE
As predicted, the show sucked.
Why do I watch these things?? Well, I guess in this case because of the scheduled Police reunion performance. It was exciting to see The Police together again! They did a new take on 'Roxanne'. For a band that hasn't played live together in so long I wish they wouldn't have f'd with the song. I would have preferred it to sound just the way I remember it, the way I love it... but that's just me.
Deja vu. Are the same performers always playing these awards shows? Yes, they are. Soooooo tired of Beyonce, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, James Blunt, John Mayer, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Dixie Chicks, ... ENOUGH already! It's like a private club that's not accepting new members!
So, I have to say. I was really disappointed in the RHCP performance. I expected more from Anthony and Flea at least. Seems even they've had it with these dang ceremonies.
Something made me completely snap last night while I was about half way through the awards show. The Rascall Flats came out and did a "tribute" to the Eagles. Ok. First, let me say that I try to keep an open mind when it comes to a musician's original work. However, once a musician makes the decision to cover another band's song, they are asking to be critiqued. I absolutely cannot believe how aweful their version of 'Hotel California' was!!! If you saw it you will agree that this is why a band should NEVER cover a song simply because they love it or were asked to do it. It HAS to be a match for your skills! Not to mention, it's unfair to do a piece of crap cover. RF butchered this song and yet got a great deal of applause. Give me a break. Yes, remakes are less often as well received as the originals. However, a performance at the Grammys shouldn't sound like amateur karaoke night in small town Iowa. On the flipside, Christina Aguilera (and I am not a fan of her work but she has a great voice) did an AMAZING version of James Brown's 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World'. He would've been proud.
2.11.07 BETTER! OUR BABBLE
My husband took me to the emergency room on Friday. I was really dehydrated and weak. I got an IV drip for the first time and it sure helped. Last night I started feeling like my old self again. Today, I am just fine. Thank God! So, we'll be back to normal tomorrow. Thanks again for your patience. Stacy

2.8.07 COLD WAR KIDS
Rock / Blues / Soul
Here is an excerpt from the Cold Water Kids tour journal:
"2-6-07 Brussels is so cold but truly truly top three greatest cities in the world. We wake up in the morning here and get out of the bus and rub the sleep from eyes and say "Hey! This is a beautiful city, old and wondrous, spellbinding even, and we would walk these cobblestone streets and buy your expensive antique furniture if it were only twenty or thirty degrees warmer and if we spoke an impossible combination of Flemish and French with a dash of Dutch "Brabantian.""

2.7.07 DJ SPOOKY, FLAMING LIPS, YOKO ONO, THURSTON MOORE, PEACHES...
Official message: "Dear Friends and Colleagues - I'm writing to say a basic hello, and I hope this message finds you well and in good spirits. It's been a while!
This is just a quick email about a project I'm really happy about. I've been a big Yoko Ono fan for years, and this is a mini project we put together a while ago. Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, plays guitar on the track, and the whole album has folks like Cat Power, The Flaming Lips, Peaches, Hank Shocklee (who produced Public Enemy), and others.
The album title is called 'Yes, I'm a Witch' and it's Yoko's first full length album in a while. If you have a moment, the track I did with her is up on my myspace page, and the official release of the full album was on February 6, 2007 on Astralwerks. It's called 'Rising' and its one of Yoko's poems - her voice came out great in the mixdown! Check it out!" DJ Spooky
'Rising' is a very different and interesting song.

2.7.07 STILL SO ILL - OUR BABBLE
You know, I have never been this sick in my whole life. I have been sick for a mother-&%^$#@* month. Sorry, I swear when I am mad.
First it was sinus pressure, headaches, and neckaches. Next my face and teeth ached. Then I got a sore throat. Eventually that turned into a productive cough. Down the road I had a day or two where I really thought I was going to be well! Out of nowhere I got hit with nausea and chills. It progressed into weakness and fatigue.
However, the Devil himself declared that I needed more suffering because I got hit Monday with the worst of flu symptoms EVER. Today my right ear started popping and I still have violent flu symptoms. I've also lost 8 pounds. I have been so f'in miserable. I'm told it's a virus so gotta wait it out. You have my deepest sympathy if you are also plagued with this. Somehow, my dear husband has managed to stay healthy and I am thankful for that.
Enough with this poor me stuff, right? I feel so guilty that I don't have the energy to work on this site like I normally do and well, you deserve an explanation. That being said, although there are technically 2 other staff members, Laura and Scott, they are also sick with bad coughs. So, you are going to have to be patient and understanding with us when I say that our dedication to this website will be low on our priority lists until we recover. Thanks, Stacy

2.5.07 HAMMOCK
Ambient / Experimental / Indie
Hammock's 'Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop an Echo' -
"Beautiful, layered guitar washes range from whisper-soft minimalism to moments of driving, slow-burn intensity. 'Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop an Echo' is characterized by the duo’s hallmark: thick curtains of cascading electric guitars that merge into pure expressions of hope, stillness, joy and loss. Simply put, Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson make music that is filled with human passion and emotion." - Projekt

2.5.07 GOODBYE SISTER MACHINE GUN
Official message: "The rumors are true. Sister Machine Gun is no mas. To paraphrase Senator Jim Webb, "I didn't leave industrial music. Industrial music left me."
As some of you know, but many don't, after seven albums, four EPs, and dozens of singles, I've decided to close up shop on the Sister Machine Gun project and explore new sonic territory. We have started a new website www.chrisrandall.net and the first Chris Randall album, 'The Devil His Due,' is now available for pre-order from shopPOSI, and a companion EP called 'Cheap Sensation' featuring outtakes and alternate versions, is currently available for digital download.
Thanks for supporting SMG for nearly two decades. Here's to the next two decades..." - Chris Randall

2.1.07 WE'RE ALL SICK - OUR BABBLE
We're working on yesterday's and today's news right now. We've all got colds or the flu and just didn't have the energy to do much of anything yesterday. Thanks for your patience!
Speaking of which, I found a "wonder drug!" I couldn't sleep a wink 2 nights ago due to constant coughing. Last night, however, I took 2 Tylenol Cold Multi-Symptom Nighttime tablets, NOT the non-drowsy, and I slept without coughing once. I kid you not. So, I have to pass this info on (in case you have a cold that this is suitable for)! No, I am not getting paid to say so.
I was just thinking of Neil Young and The AT&T National Pro-Am Golf Tournament that's coming up (Pebble Beach, CA). I'm not a golf fan but I've gone to the thing a few times in my life. Mostly because I am already visiting the area, generally Carmel, where I have family. The scenery at these courses is magnificent!
Last time I went (like five years ago I'm guessing) there were moments when I was standing next to Bill Murray, Oscar De La Hoya, Dan Marino, Andy Garcia, Huey Lewis, Christopher O'Donnell, Rush Limbaugh-(jackass),... and Neil Young.
I don't get starstruck too often, we're all just people, but I did freak out when Neil had to come right next to me to get his ball back on the green. It took me like 10 minutes to be able to speak again. Ridiculous, right? I wonder if he's playing this year. BTW - who doesn't like Neil Young?
