12.31.07 JONATHA BROOKE
Acoustic / Folk Rock / Pop
Have you heard Jonatha Brooke yet? We love her! You gotta check out her songs, 'Prodigal Daughter' and 'Careful What You Wish For' - both off of her most recent release, 'Careful What You Wish For' (2007, Bad Dog Records). Click here (myspace.com/jonathabrooke) to listen to these songs now!
Guess what's in her gear box: "Lately I've been using Audix VX 10 for my vocals. It has got a really rich velvety mid / low range, but still has a lot of power on the top. If that doesn't work in the particular room, the true road dog sure fire mic is the Sure Beta 87.
I usually record with the CAD Equitek 300. For the money it's the most wicked chick singer microphone. My vocals on 'Ten Cent Wings', most of 'Steady Pull', and all of 'Back in the Circus' were recorded on my Equitek.
For guitars, Ive got a fabulous blue telecaster re-issue from my pal Knud at Fender in Denmark. A gorgeous Guild Valencia from the custom shop in Nashville, courtesy of Billy Siegle and Al and Ed!! I had the most precious little guild F-30 that was stolen two summers ago in Portland, and a 52 telecaster re-issue too, (both courtesy of Billy Siegle) may they at least be bringing someone some beautiful music...." 12.31.07 MC LARS
Rap / Punk / Comedy
Depending on your sense of humor, you may or may not find this music pretty humorous. We do! San Francisco's MC Lars songs, 'Internet Relationship' and 'Scientology = WTF?' made us giggle and made us dance. We would definitely classify these songs as "white rap" with a very slight Cake sound to them.
Our favorite tune of theirs, however, has got to be 'Hot Topic is Not Punk Rock'. Click below to listen to them now (and to download them for free!).

12.26.07 OUR BABBLE
Do you remember when libraries were quiet? I sure do. I vividly recall the "shhh" gesture when I'd so much as slam a book shut. When exactly did libraries become noisy (they certainly aren't quiet anymore)? My mother and I were talking about this on Christmas and how we've even witnessed librarians shouting across the room.
12.20.07 WE'RE TAKING A 1-WEEK BREAK

12.18.07 OUR BABBLE
Is it just me or does it NOT feel like Christmastime? Here in Wisconsin we have snow but it just doesn't feel like it should be Christmas next week already.
So, what is with Italy? An Italian court has again ruled that a child could not have a specific name, most recently the name of "Friday." To make it worse, they also ordered what the child shall be named (the court chose "Gregory," after a saint). The parents have no say. I can't believe this is happening in 2007.
So, if you are into the paranormal like I am you probably are familiar with a new show called Paranormal State. In a recent show a priest told a family that they really needed to clean up their house as there was a lot of clutter. According to the priest, "demons" are attracted to homes that are dirty and disorganized...
...I scratch my head and think it's a darn good thing my house is fairly clean. IF this is true, perhaps that is why so many people have unexplainable things happening in their basements and attics - they tend to be messy, right? Like the saying goes, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness!

12.13.07 SAD NEWS FROM VICE SQUAD
Punk / Rock / Ska
Official message: "It is with great regret that we have to announce the death of the original Vice Squad guitarist and songwriter Dave Bateman. News came through in the early hours of 12th December that Dave had died in an accident in Spain.
We were reluctant to make an announcement before receiving confirmation for fear of upsetting his family and friends unnecessarily. However, this afternoon I spoke with original Vice Squad drummer Shane Baldwin who told me that sadly the news was correct. Dave fell and sustained a head injury whilst celebrating his 46th birthday
on 10th December. He was rushed to hospital but died the next day.
I doubt that Vice Squad would ever have existed without Dave as we
wrote all the best-known early songs together and he was
an excellent organizer of rehearsals in garages and church halls and
blagged us our first ever gigs.
I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to his family and friends,
and in particular to his Mum." - Beki
I've been a longtime Vice Squad fan and offer my deepest sympathy as well. -Stacy

12.13.07 THE CURE / WEST MEMPHIS THREE
Official message: "The Cure Donate autographed guitar to
aid in death row inmate’s fefense fund...
December 8th, 2007: San Francisco, Calif. — The Cure will be auctioning a customised Schecter RS-1000 acoustic guitar to raise money for the defense fund of three wrongfully-imprisoned Arkansas men. Damien Echols (who is on death row), Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. — also known as the West Memphis Three (www.wm3.org) — were convicted for murdering three elementary school children in 1994.
This special guitar was not only designed to lead singer and guitarist Robert Smith’s specifications — maple body with spruce top, maple and rosewood neck and specially designed white pearl moon and star inlays — but it was also used in the studio by the musician this year.
The guitar is signed by all four-band members — Robert, Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums), and Porl Thompson (guitar); and features a unique Cure logo drawn by Thompson, who is responsible for the majority of the band’s artwork down the years. It also includes a “Free the West Memphis Three” message written by Smith.
The auction will last for 14 days — from December 11 (Echols’s birthday) to December 25 — one day for each year the West Memphis Three have spent behind bars.
The starting bid for the instrument has been set at $999.
“It is my hope that through Skeleton Key Auctions, both funds and awareness will be raised about the travesty perpetrated on these three innocent men,” said Anje Vela, president of Music4Life. “Cases like the West Memphis Three’s are a blemish to our justice system. No innocent man or woman should be left to rot in prison without recourse, just because they lack the financial resources for a fair fight. Skeleton Key Auctions is grateful for bands such as The Cure who have generously donated to this cause.”
For further information about the guitar and to place a bid, log on to www.thecure.com or www.skeletonkeyauctions.com." - Anje Vela

12.12.07 ANDY MAC
Acoustic / Folk Rock / Pop
What Andy Mac learned last week:
"1. I went to a 1am showing of The Mist. Good God. I thought it was going to be just some stupid wannabe modern horror movie. It's not. That movie messed me up. I highly recommend it.
2. People get the feeling of rejection much too fast. I say this to everyone who messages me... I'm SORRY if I don't reply right away. I will as soon as I can. :o) I promise. Please don't message me saying "Why are you ignoring me?" I'm not.
3. Your ears can most definitely play tricks on you. I'm currently mixing some tracks from my new album. And I swear the same mix played on the same system sounds different to me all the time. The songs sound faster or slower, louder or softer, etc... I'd hate to have me as a witness on what I heard. I've always had good ears, but they're playing tricks on me now..."

12.12.07 THE WALLBIRDS

12.11.07 COSIO
Indie / Folk / Acoustic
"The band Cosio was born in a one bedroom house with a basin of hot water as the only comfort this world provided after leaving the womb. We were raised in a windy valley that occasionally caught fire all around the hills tops. The music we have created is inspired by the lives we have lived, some would consider small lives speaking of small towns. We write about our grandmothers and grandfathers..." - Official website

12.11.07 NEW FROM EREZ YAARY
Ambient / Electro / Experimental
Official message: "New Album: 'Synergos'...
'Synergos' is one long and fluid piece of music, soothing and encompassing. Almost 40 minutes from start to finish in one bite. It is my most ambitious creation, composing and producing a single unit of 40 minutes where an external sequencer was dealing with all the poly-rhythmic steps while the internal Apple based sequencer was dealing with longer musical cues.
In the making of this project, two hardware devices were built in order to extend the sound pallete used in the album as well as provide additional compositional control. The first is the SID Box 6561, a synthesizer built around the Commodore C64 SID sound chip, while the second is the Skylight MSS 2007 Midi Step Sequencer. The MSS 2007 drives all sequences and drum parts, while the SID Box provides sound effects and strings." - Erez Yaary

12.11.07 OUR BABBLE
It has been my experience that shopping for flowers online is a joke. I am not sure what the point is of picking out a design when the bouquet that actually gets delivered never matches the picture of the one you purchased on the website. The vase is often a different color or shape, the flower types and accents vary, and even the colors can be completely different...
I once ordered a spring bouquet of gorgeous purples, pinks and whites (there are different whites!) that was to be in a white wicker basket but instead my grandmother received a yellow and orange arrangement in a green longneck vase. BTW - I have at least 4 more similar experiences...
Today I tried to order a particular holiday bouquet I saw on a florist's website. Only when I asked was I told that the outcome of the arrangement depends on the designer - that they have "complete artistic freedom." It was pointed out, however, that the vase would be clear glass instead of silver, the glass ornaments in the picture would not be included, and the roses would not be white but rather red. While I normally support the idea of "complete artistic freedom" I sit here wondering what the heck the point is of showing a picture...
Which for some reason leads me to another burning question. Is anyone out there feeling 100% secure in using a clean public toilet that hangs from a wall? How much wear and tear can a porcelain toilet (that jets out of a wall) take each day before it finally collapses? - Stacy

12.6.07 OUR BABBLE - A GOOD MESSAGE IN GENERAL
I got the following email this morning. I do want to mention that those who have read this magazine know that 80% of the artists WE cover are, at the time of coverage, either unsigned or fairly unknown (or don't receive enough press!). I started this magazine due to the same disgust she speaks of.
"Hi, my request is that you guys should really do an interview with the band Beat Assassins. They are really great band and have sold over 20,000 albums without any radio or tour support at all. I truly believe it is a shame that the indie artists who are out there really making an impact and receiving a response never truly get mentioned because they don't fit the personal taste of the writers within the magazine. I find this very insulting as fan of indie music. Consider this band, also other indie bands that out here TRULY making a name for themselves without major label support. Sincerely, Amber N."
Beat Assassins describe their sound as "Ghetto Rock-n-Roll," per their official website. Visit them at

12.5.07 NEW CORNELIA EP
Electronica / Breakbeat / Other
Official message: "Oxygen is my friend. Without her, you could say I just wouldn't be.
My song... our song, that you hear - it's a relationship. Our conversation.
The air and my chest meeting at some half way point in my throat.
So, this is what I do. I write songs, and in turn they rewrite me.
I sing them. I sometimes play them... or just play with them. The song needs to be played with; it has its own character and feel. Like plants, rabbits... they all need that arching fresh air to function.
I now invite you to listen to my newly oxygenated songs here on Myspace (www.myspace.com/corneliadahlgren). Four of them, on this EP I call 'Capsule'." - Cornelia
