12.22.06 THE MATCHES NEED YOUR HELP
Pop Punk / Alternative / Rock
Official message: "Dear yous, We here at the Matches need 70's and 80's old television sets. We're gonna gut them, so if you've just thrown a paycheck at a new plasma, and still have the old one sitting around for the pit bull to watch, well, maybe it's time that you let the TV see a little fame. Could end up that your crappy old TV ends up the star of Music Video Television, and becomes the envy of even the largest and sleekest HD flatscreen.
Similarly-- we're also looking for a @#%$-storm of old computer monitors that wish to be artists as well. They need no prior experience flying through the air in slow-motion-- our quick, fun, and easy crash-course will have them the star of the show in no time! Thanks all." Shawn, the Matches

Psychedelic / Rock / Crunk
Official message: "Well, as the snow settles over our beautiful rolling countryside and the carolers gather in the candlelit cobbled streets, Fields would like to extend their Yuletide greetings and love to one and all.
This has been a brilliant year for us and with our debut album now almost ready to be unleashed on the world we are looking forward to the new year like Tiny Tim looks forward to a slice of turkey. 12.21.06 RUNNING THIS MAGAZINE – OUR BABBLE
Wow. First off, I never thought we'd be this far so soon. We only launched this last July and our readership is doubling every month since. We have paid zero dollars on advertising (we're non-profit). So, in that regard we're doing really well.
What an education this has been though! I can never tell what bands will return our messages. You know what has completely stunned me? That the unsigned bands, or bands with smaller followings, are the bands that are least likely to give us the time of day. They won't thank us for mentions, won't return emails, won't contribute... the people that need the most help often won't give us the time of day. I find that so very odd.
On the flipside, I'm also pleasantly surprised (on a regular basis) in regards to who does get in contact with us. We all nearly had a stroke when musicians like the Dandy Warhols and Tim Finn contributed ghost stories exclusively to us this last October. They gave us the time of day, go figure. We're forever grateful!
We want to feature all the music we love, whether well-known or not. So, it saddens us when that becomes a very difficult & fruitless task. Bands, the readership is here and is quickly growing!
My husband brought up a good point though, that not everyone is business minded. That managers and assistants are very important for bands but not all bands have this luxury. So, here's my advise: become business minded. Every little thing that you do causes a chain reaction (a number of events triggered by the same initial event). Who knows what will come of each contact you make, each website you contribute to, each bulletin you post, each flyer you hand out, etc. - Stacy
12.20.06 LIZ FRASER (COCTEAU TWINS)
Official message: "Two big things to announce: First, she has agreed to contribute to an upcoming Royal Shakespeare Company production in which a handful of artists—including Antony of Antony and the Johnsons and Natalie Merchant (formerly of 10,000 Maniacs), along with a number of classical musicians—will compose contemporary sounds to run alongside a Shakespearean sonnet. It remains unclear as yet which sonnet Elizabeth has chosen.
The really big news, though, is that Liz's long-awaited, much-anticipated solo record will finally be released in spring 2007. The album will feature 8 tracks plus one cover song. This information was originally reported in the NME, but no further details are yet available."

12.20.06 AUTO ESCAPE HAS A GUITAR FOR SALE
Rock / Indie / Alternative
Partial official description: "Since their debut in early 2005, Dallas quartet Auto Escape has quickly become one of the most exciting, talked-about new bands around. The young members of Auto Escape create ground-breaking, inspiring music that glues together the scattered fragments of modern rock. Smart, poignant lyrics, danceable grooves and rich arrangements add up to a sound that is fresh, unique and instantly appealing."
Official message: "Selling my Marilyn Monroe guitar. $600. It's name is Marilyn and it's a blonde American Standard Fender Telecaster that has been my main guitar since Auto Escape's first show. It's in really good condition - a couple paint chips of course, but it plays and sounds perfect. I've thrown it on the ground several times during the recording of 'Turn It Off' EP and at shows.
It's got a big Marilyn Monroe sticker on it. The sticker is covered in cigarette smoke, blood, sweat, and beer. I'll supply a replacement sticker if you don't want my blood on your guitar (I don't have any diseases, don't worry). It needs a good home. I will probably cry when I hand this over, I'm serious. She is my baby, but I feel the time has come to move on.
Message me at MySpace (myspace.com/autoescape) if you are interested. I will be picky about who buys this. If you are a douchebag and are going to sell it on eBay I will not sell it to you."

12.18.06 NOUVELLE VAGUE
Other / New Wave / Lounge
Partial official description: "Nouvelle Vague is two well seasoned, multi-instrumentalists / producers, Marc Collins and Oliver Libaus, who have found the beauty and heart in the sounds from this era and transformed them - cleverly merging and arranging this radical music.
Some of the songs are stripped back to acoustic arrangements with lithe shaker rhythms achieved by gathering a parade of heavenly chanteuses from all over the world (six French, one Brazilian and one New Yorker) as guest vocalists to sex up everyone from XTC and Modern English to The Clash and The Undertones."
We really like these guys! Their covers are interesting and unique takes on some great tunes.

12.18.06 TAPES 'N TAPES - STOLEN ITEMS
Indie
Official message: "First off, we'd like to thank everyone who came out to our shows in
Japan and Australia. We felt really fortunate to get the opportunity to
play in such wonderful places. It was one of the coolest things any of us
will ever get to do. So thanks, to everyone who made it so much fun,
and to beautiful Australian weather, that warmed our cold Minnesota
bodies.
Unfortunately, not everything was flowers and sunshine downunder. On
Friday, only a few hours before we were scheduled to fly home from Perth,
we got robbed. Our van was parked at city beach (right outside of
Perth, Australia), while we were taking a brief frolic in the Indian Ocean.
Our tour manager left the van unattended for about 10 minutes, and when
we came back, someone had pried open a window and stole a lot of our
personal belongings.
Luckily very little of our gear was stolen (only 2
big muff distortion pedals, one boss loop station, one DW9000 kick drum
pedal, and a tambourine). But our personal belongings did not fair so
well. One of our passports was stolen, two Mac laptops were stolen, one
digital camera, all of Josh's clothes, one Blackberry, two cell phones,
and all sorts of various inconvenient personal effects (glasses, keys,
wallets, shoes, etc.).
So far nothing has been recovered by the police.
One of us is still stuck in Australia, sorting out passport details,
but hopefully that should be resolved in the next 48hrs. The biggest
thing that we lost from all of this was years worth of photos and other
sentimental stuff stored on the two computers that were stolen. We'll
probably never see any of these things again, but in the off chance that
any of you might come across any of it, we've added some descriptive
information below. Thanks to everyone who's already helped us out with all
of this." Yours Truly,
tapes 'n tapes
Some of the stolen stuff was:
Black Macbook - serial #4H6460RRWGM
Silver Mac 12" Powerbook - still looking for the serial number
Blue and black Graves suit case with all sorts of colorful t-shirts
and some stinky Levi's jeans, and even stinkier socks
Green Russian made Big Muff pedal - hand decorated with picture of
Gene Simmons face (also know as the "limited edition Gene Simmons Big
Muff")
Silver US made Big Muff pedal - (with a number of soldering jobs done
on the battery connection)
A bunch of tapes 'n tapes CDs (US version of 'The Loon') and t-shirts

12.16.06 LEFTOVER VOICES
Leftover Voices is an independent film that we'd really like to see. What we already know about it is that it features a couple of great Chicago musicians!

Official description: "Celia is a painfully shy, highly creative woman who has isolated herself from the outside world. Even as a young adult, Celia has never had a best friend and has no clue what steps to take to find one. Resigned to her isolation, Celia turns to her fantasy life and creates her own world filled with friends, a step which frightens her protective Grandmother.
Before Celia can get comfortable in the fantasy, she discovers her co-worker, Josh, is having a similar problem trying to ask a woman out on a date. Through Josh and Allison's interactions Celia discovers she is not as alien as she believed and wiht a little push from Granny, discovers her ability to conquer the fears that have kept her at arm's length from the world.

12.15.06 TURBONEGRO NEWS
Punk / Rock
Official message: "Nick Oliveri recording with Turbo!
Nick took time off from touring with Mondo Generator to drop by the studio and lay down some AWETHOME tracks with us last Sunday, one of them titled 'Night Calls'; a song he was originally commisioned to write as a theme song for Playboy Channel's tv show by the same name.
Hugh Hefner's eunuchs (i.e. the executives at the channel) hated the song, but we sure as HECK don't! We plainly REFUSE to be castrated by someone who themselves have been castrated. Nick has also written a song about us, a homage to Turbonegro, called 'Turbonegro'!
Hey, be sure to check out Mondo Generator's absolutely BRILLIANT new album 'Dead Planet' ASAFP! We keep playing this record over and over again, and you will too."

12.15.06 B&B EXCLUSIVE! FAMOUS HOLIDAY RECIPE FROM ASPHODEL FIELDS
Progressive / Electronica / Rock
"As you may or may not know, we ride ostriches on and off stage at our shows. What many people do not know though is that, each Christmas, we get new ostriches and eat the old ones. Here is our famous recipe:
Salt and pepper the bird the day before you cook it. Prick the skin to let the juice out. Put flour and paprika on the skin. Stuff the ostrich with sauerkraut and caraway seed and skewer the opening. Put the beast in a roasting pan with the cover off.
Cook in a 500 degree oven until well brown; about 35-45 minutes. Turn down to 350 degrees; cover; baste often with stock. Cook about 2 1/2 hours (or more) until done.
NOTE: This recipe can also be used with capon. In that case, turn the oven to 450 degrees for browning and finish at 350 degrees." - Asphodel Fields

Official message: "Hi Everyone, The Early Years play their final show of 2006 on Thursday 14th December. It'll be the last show we'll be playing for quite a while in the UK, more of a party vibe to celebrate 2006, which has been an amazing year for us. It's at the Old Queens Head on Essex Road, London N1. Not sure what time we'll be onstage, but it's a fairly small venue so make sure you get in early. There are DJs on till 2 and its only £2/3 to get in.
We've just finished our new EP 'The Great Awakening', which is due for release in early February. Here's the tracklisting:
Say What I Want To

12 drops lavender
6 drops sweet orange
4 drops Roman Chamomile
4 drops ylang-ylang
3 drops sandalwood
This is called 'Angel's Breath'. Light burner and enjoy. Can also be diluted in jojoba oil and used as a Yule perfume.
For more seasonal Yuletide aromatherapy recipes go to www.snowdriftfarm.com - brilliant.
As we are Pagans, we celebrate Yule - in a manner not very different from everyone else doing Christ-mass, except we obviously arn't at Midnight Mass or doing a lot of singing of 'Away In A Manger', etc. ;)
Happy Holidays to everyone." Joolz

12.08.06 OUR BABBLE
Driving to Chipotle for my Friday burrito today I was set-off by another stupid ad on the radio. Last year's ads for the "right hand" ring got me all nuts. Now there's the "forever" ring and a “journey” pendant? It must suck to be a man. I really do feel for you guys, the pressure of having to give diamonds.
These commercials were scientifically designed to plant insane ideas into the heads of women - that a "forever" ring PROVES your love and nothing else can. Whatever! Material items are never absolute proof. Ladies, put your men at ease this holiday season and tell them you don't expect diamonds (and mean it).
I've been a fan of The Lords Of The New Church for ages. Yet, I just found out the following tidbit. According to Wikipedia.com, the stunning Liv Tyler once lived with Stiv Bators! "In the 1980s Bators became romantically involved with model and singer Bebe Buell, mother of then infant Liv Tyler, and temporarily set up home with the pair in Bangor, Maine." How cool is that?
I had to laugh out loud at this 'About Me' description on a MySpace account I visited today: "I like to dress in incredibly fancy outfits and wander through wooded areas high as a goddamn kite (if it can't get dirty it's not worth wearing)."
12.08.06 QUEENS OF NOIZE
Showtunes / Electronic / Big Beat
Partial official press release: "WHO THE FUCK ARE QUEENS OF NOIZE? Mairead and Tabitha have been wreaking deck-wrecking vengeance on an
unsuspecting public since 2002. Champions of the never-mind-the-gaps school of DJing, their uniquely chaotic delivery has assured their regal status amongst the current school of Rock & Roll DJs."
It was a partnership born out of a damp basement in Dalston, cheap Vodka and a shared inability not to jump off the closest piece of furniture when in earshot of a good record. The girls cut (and chipped) their teeth playing weekly
shambolic 5 hour sets in Shoreditch's 333 club where Mairead coincidentally
booked the DJs. Their success was testament to the power of shared
conviction, good music and eye-catching pants. Not ones to be limited by the fly postered battlements of East London, new challenges beckoned in the shape of Friday nights at Camden's Barfly."
Queens Of Noize have released their first 7" single - 'Indie Boys Don't Deserve It'. The tune is catchy as all hell.

Indie / Soul / Punk
We love The Svengalis! You have to check out their song clips for 'Runaway', 'Soda and Cigarettes', and 'Best Days': www.myspace.com/thesvengalis.
"Our day at the Studio (Radio 1) in four short paragraphs:
We had a fabulous day running around the studios stealing free earplugs and sliding down ramps.
We also stumbled into the editing room of Jonathan Ross! Which was a novelty that wore off shortly after I forgot to shake off after using the toilet.
The food was nice but you had to pay for it... Jim had salmon.
The room was small, the vibe was large!!"
12.07.06 THE MOON? NAH. BE A HERO THIS XMAS BY GIVING THE NORTH ATLANTIC
Punk / Alternative
"Stark yet arrestingly lush music; a staggering blend of NY post-punk, Chicago noise rock, and San Diego punk, all tied together by drunkenly literate character studies and a penchant for textural embellishment and sonic layering." - Insound.com
The North Atlantic's most recent release, 'Wires In The Walls' is outstanding, definitely intense and high-energy! We just got our copy and it kicks ass.

12.06.06 SNOOP DOGG HAS FLEA
Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers had some things to say about his non-profit music school in L.A. (The Silverlake Conservatory of Music) and Snoop Dogg:
"Last summer I asked Snoop Dogg if he would come down and record with the kids in the studio. A bunch of kids got in the studio over at Capitol Records in Hollywood and Snoop Doggy Dogg the dee oh double g came down and met with each kid individually, took pictures with all of them, signed all their autographs, and the kids rocked some funk grooves and Snoop rocked rhymes with them and it was recorded. He spent several hours doing it and he showed them how he did it in the studio for free. He was gracious, polite, and giving with the kids...
... and he had a gig that night that he had to get a plane to, but he still showed up and spent the whole day with the kids because he cared. There was no press, nothing to gain, no glory. He did it because it was the thing a person with heart does."
12.05.06 FUGITIV
Rock / Alternative / Pop
Official description: "What is FuGiTiV?
We could attempt to explain or mislead - but in the end?
All bullshit. We write music that means something to us.
We put on shows that entertain, shock - maybe offend.
If you connect with any part of this, then maybe we've done something.
Love us or hate us but don't forget us. This is just the beginning..."

12.05.06 ROGER O'DONNELL
Partial official message: "Long known as the man behind the keys for legendary bands like The Cure
and earlier for The Psychedelic Furs, Roger O'Donnell recently released his beautiful
new solo album 'The Truth in Me'.
The album is a collection of songs composed
and recorded using a single instrument, the Moog Voyager. It’s an album that was
initially inspired by Roger’s contribution to the Moog Documentary, but turned
into a creative challenge for this extraordinary artist. Now, Roger is touring the
country, bringing his Moogs and a singer, performing his exciting new songs live."
'The Truth In Me' has inspired a number of musicians to join Roger in his
exploration. Remixes have already been done of a number of the album’s tracks
by such luminaries as Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service / Dntel / Figurine,
Kieran Hebden of Four Tet, and Jimmy LaValle
of The Album Leaf."
