4.25.08 SIX MISTAKES BANDS MAKE ON MYSPACE
I realize musicians aren't always business minded, but I think you have to try to become business minded in order to up your chances of success. There are so many small things you can do to help yourselves.
1) Unless you're last name is Morrissey, Van Halen, Jagger,...
Don't make people guess your last name in order to request your band's friendship on MySpace. That's just asking to turn people away, and off. Personal sites, we understand. Band sites, it's a no-no.
2) When someone, like our music magazine, asks for a band's friendship, either accept it or deny it - it's that simple. Sending the following message instead is ridiculous:
"Thanks for the add request. But I won't accept FR (friend requests) without message because I believe every single relationship begins with saying "Hi." Here is more of my thought. If you agree, drop me a line.
I'm OK with any single word even like "Fxxkoffstopplayingthatshit!!!!!!"
Sorry if this message makes you feel uncomfortable.
If you don't want to take your time, just leave it and I'll deny it after a week."
It's great to reach out to people/fans, but to require it is a lot to ask.
3) If your MySpace page says something like, "Buy our new album," make it easy for people to purchase it. State what outlets are selling it and/or place a link on your site. The easier you make it, the less likely you are to lose sales.
4) Place a bio, large or small (and small is better than nothing), on your page. Not only will this create more of a connection with your current or future fans, it will also provide band information to publications who wish to write about you.
5) Your MySpace music player: Each track should be labeled properly. For example, with the song title AND the name of the album it appears on. If there is no song title or album yet, may we suggest something like "demo" for the song title and "upcoming 2009 album" for the album info?
6) Keep in mind that MySpace users have the option to have all music players auto start. If they have that option chosen and you have a video (or in many cases we've seen, several videos) auto starting, your music player and videos will all be playing at the same time. It's not only unpleasant, it also makes your visitors physically stop them, or perhaps just leave your page. - Stacy

4.21.08 SENSER
Alternative / Rock / Electronica
Expect a new album from Senser this summer...
"'End Of The World Show' is a stream of consciousness, a multi-themed cut & paste with the central idea that it's part of human nature to always think that the end of the world is imminent.
And of course it has come many times before for various civilizations throughout human history.
Post 9/11, end-times paranoia, social isolation and constant distraction-caused consumer culture. The holographic nature of the body and the universe, modern warfare as a kind of showbiz porn. The sexy side of the apocalypse. These are all themes running through 'End Of The World Show'.
Senser were a key part of the early 90’s music scene: having released a truly seminal and mould-breaking album ‘Stacked Up’ which achieved No 4 in the UK album chart and worldwide sales of over 250,000." - Planetary

The other day a musician asked me what I consider to be "original" nowadays. I haven't given my answer yet, but in the meantime I'll say a person who declares themself to dislike the taste of bacon.
Is there anyone else out there that has a guest room dedicated to housing plastic food storage containers? So many shapes and sizes, and different lids... 4.7.08 LIL BECK'S BABBLE
Rock
"I'm just not in the mood for jokes today. I'm pretty depressed about Chuck Heston kicking the bucket. I'm not sad because some gun-loving nutcase is dead, although he was cool in those 70s sci-fi flix. But I never saw Soylent Green...
And I just learned from his obit that all the food people in the future will have to eat will be made out of PEOPLE! I'm pretty bummed about this. There are many people (other than Heston) who I like quite a bit. But I do not want to eat thems." Peace, Greg (Lil Beck)
May we suggest a listen to Lil Beck's 'Life After Hip Hop'?

NY's Des Roar's been creating a stir with their infectious style that features a soulful '60s rock 'n roll side, and other times showcases more of a '50s feel.

4.1.08 DRIVE BY
Rock / Alternative / Indie
Official message: "The other day, I was given the new Drive By record by my dear friend Todd Price. For those of you who are unfamiliar, he sings and plays guitar in the band. I had been eagerly awaiting this record quite some time. Their initial release floored me. It's everything about music that I love. Amazing and honest rock songs. Todd has the uncanny knack to write the kind of chorus that I'm jealous...
Upon listening to their record 'A Delicate Situation' I was knocked on my ass once again, and I expected nothing less. If this band isn't gigantic by the end of the year, then there's no justice in the world... On April 8th, 'A Delicate Situation' is released and I recommend you all make a B line to the record store and grab one. The songs are sure to be ingrained in your skull for quite some time." - Regards, Mikeyway (My Chemical Romance)

4.1.08 REMIX RADIOHEAD
Official news: "Radiohead, iTunes and GarageBand are giving you the opportunity to remix the band's new single 'Nude'.
To make remixing easy, the separate 'stems' from the song are available to purchase from iTunes here (www.radioheadremix.com/buy). The 'stems' available are bass, voice, guitar, strings/fx and drums. You can mix them in any way you like, either by adding your own beats and instrumentation, or just remixing the original parts.
If you purchase all five 'stems' from iTunes during the first week they're available, you'll be sent an access code to a GarageBand file ready to open in GarageBand or Logic. However, you don't need GarageBand to do a remix, all the stems are in iTunes Plus format and compatible with several music software platforms."

thepinkspiders
We thought as a way of piquing your interest, that rather than posting another song from the album we'd post the only song that didn't make the album. We have in effect posted the worst song we recorded. So if you like it, then mathematically speaking (transitive property?) you'll probably like the whole album.
If you don't like it, it's ok. The rest of the album is better." - The Pink Spiders4.28.08 Eat Cake With Interpol (NY):
"A few days ago I was at La Valetta the Mexican bakery. Alberto, the owner, keeps decrepit rotting wedding cakes in the window to scare off the gringos. But a few of us local hipsters have gotten hip to fact that their food is awesome and they charge almost nothing.
Occasionally I'll see a character like Larry Tee in there or Cindy Sherman or three quarters of Interpol." - Roger Greenawalt, Record Producer
