4.27.07 OUR BABBLE
The talk here in my area of Wisconsin is how Paul McCartney stayed overnight at the Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan Wednesday night (w/ like 24 members of his staff, per the radio). Everyone is completely freaked out that Paul was here and that no one knew about it until he was gone... not to mention, why he was in Wisconsin.
I really didn't want Asia to win on that Next Pusscat Doll show. I shouldn't admit I watched it every single week it was on, but I did. I was cheering for Chelsea.
Oh, and how can I forget all of the talk about a certain band that came to Wisconsin last weekend. The performance that started great but ended with the front man falling flat on his back and being carried off stage. He's ok but... I can't imagine the pressure it must be to put on a great show every night. In this particular case, their fans were use to a little messiness - which has added a lot of charm to them. Thus, I'm sure the majority of the audience expected more mess, just not so much.
That got me thinking about how I always hear people saying something like, "Eric Clapton was way better when he was coked-up." That does seem to be true, and it's not my place to judge if a musician makes a personal choice to use drugs (but I do have a problem with the audience expecting that out of them). -Stacy
4.27.07 CHECK OUT VICIOUS ALLIANCE
Electro / Industrial / Gothic
Official description: "Hailing from the suburban sprawl that is rapidly developing the landcape in a sea of concrete and strip malls, Vicious Alliance is a creative outlet to express the rage of its members against such a world. Fusing the synthetic elements and melodic progression of epic Futurepop with the harsh vocals, throbbing basslines, and thick drums of dark ebm; Vicious Alliance tries to reconstruct the world along the lines of a glorious past melded with a future full of potential.
Vicious Alliance is inspired by but does not glorify war, death, destruction, insanity, ego, or genocide...
Vicious Alliance instead seeks to provide an introspective new look into the world of decay in which we live and our potential for either a tragic or glorious change."
We're digging their music and can't wait to hear more from them - so, please check them out!

4.26.07 WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO...
Pop / Disco House / Soul
Remember Curiosity Killed The Cat? I use to like them quite a bit when they came onto the scene years ago...
"Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot was the front man. With his unique dancing and smooth singing style, he was the voice of Curiosity Killed The Cat, deemed as the first boy band who played their own instruments, gracing the covers of "Smash Hits" and every other teeny-bopper magazine in the 80s, as well as the magazines read by their parents! Ben VP, with Curiosity, had the hit singles, 'Misfit', 'Down To Earth', 'Ordinary Day', 'Name And Number' and in the early nineties the hit single 'Hang On In There Baby'." - Official website
Well, he's known as Ben VP now and released an album called 'Element VS Ben VP' (Sept. 2006). Visit his official website at www.benvp.com for more information on this recent release.
Also! Check out his official Myspace to hear some Ben VP & Curiosity Killed The Cat music clips.

4.26.07 LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH
Roots Music / Folk / Experimental
We were just introduced to this amazing album and thought we'd urge you to check it out too if you are unfamiliar with it...
"After fifteen years, German ensemble Love Is Colder Than Death is finally honoured with an extensive anthology. 'Time' features 33 tracks in almost perfect chronological order on two Compact Discs.
From their early phase, where they would mingle electronic sounds with ethnic- and medieval elements, up to the purist World Music approach of today, the listener can witness the band’s consequent artistic quest towards fulfilling their ultimate musical vision.
The more time passed, the more have Love Is Colder Than Death been narrowing down their music towards its absolute essence – a drink from the musical fountain that mankind created via its history and the diversity of its cultures."

4.24.07 FM EINHEIT
Experimental / Electronica / Hawaiian (per official website)
FM Einheit (Einstürzende Neubauten, Abwärts) is still making amazing music. We've just listened to some of his currently unreleased tracks and they are entirely transfixing! We had to wrap our minds around the tracks a bit but now it's like a new favorite candy - we can't get enough of it.
We especially recommend checking out the unsettling sexy 'Take Me Upstairs' and the very interesting 'Selvom'.

4.23.07 SIOUXSIE & BUDGIE'S DREAMSHOW DVD
"One of alternative rock's most intriguing figures for nearly three decades, Siouxsie Sioux hits the small screen this month with the first-ever domestic DVD release of 'Dreamshow'.
The concert features Siouxsie reunited with Banshees drummer Budgie and the backing of The Millennia Ensemble. Filmed live at London's Royal Festival Hall in June 2004, the new DVD captures the original punk-goth queen on extended versions of such favorites as 'Spellbound,' 'Christine,' 'Peek-A-Boo,' and 'Kiss Them For Me.'
The DVD also includes rehearsal and interview footage, plus five songs performed that same year at The 100 Club, the first club Siouxsie And The Banshees ever played. “We called it Dreamshow because this is the show we've always dreamed of playing with the backing of an orchestra,” says Siouxsie. Howl along with the Banshees." -Rhino Records

4.20.07 AND BOOM! THINGS CHANGE OVERNIGHT, OUR BABBLE
Hard to believe we haven't been around for a year yet. Our readership continues to double every month and things are suddenly getting extra hectic around here! Thanks for checking us out, whether it be once or multiple times! We really appreciate it.
Ok. This has bothered me for years. I have a pinhole inside both corners of my lips. I make people show me their mouths all the time and no one else seems to have this. I can't be the only one!? Perhaps I should stick a rhinestone earring into each corner and see how it looks.
We got an email asking where larger sized music t-shirts can be purchased. For those of you looking for 2x, 3x, and 4x music tees & hoodies, Hot Topic carries these sizes. Their selection is limited genre-wise but it's a start...
We've written about this before - we've always been baffled why the more popular groups don't offer larger sizes. I'm sure that a band with a following like The Cure's, for example, could justify making a small run of larger shirts. Makes more sense than assuming everyone is going to start that diet. Damn. I'm thinking about Shake'N Bake porkchops again! How pathetic. - Stacy

4.20.07 YOU SAY PARTY! WE SAY DIE!

Partial official description: "Vancouver's resident dance-punk savants You Say Party! We Say Die' are a catalyst on the edge of a scene brimming towards explosion; hybridized, mechanized, philosophizing machines that have learned self-awareness and found their soul.
They're among us, androids slowly infiltrating all of our most trusted institutions. Today the dance-punk scene. Tomorrow the Capital. Start hoarding supplies."

2007 sees them return with something even more spellbinding, '23'. Recorded and produced by the band in New York City during the second half of last year, they drafted in Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio) to engineer it while mixing duties were shared by Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Killers, Nine Inch Nails) and Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Bloc Party)." - 4AD

4.16.07 OUT NOW: UB40'S 'UNDER THE INFLUENCE'
"Influenced by the many Blues parties they attended as teenagers in the multiracial Birmingham, UB40's recordings were inspired by early 70's reggae and classic soul, songs that would have otherwise been forgotten in the public eye.
Those influences are ever present on this superb 18 track collection. UB40 have dug deep to bring you the very best in dub, reggae and soul from such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, U Roy, Gregory Isaacs and Black Uhuru, to mention just a few." - Amazon.co.uk

4.13.07 REDEMPTION'S WORKING ON NEW ALBUM
Gothic / Rock
Partial official description: "Redemption redeems the Goth Rock tradition started by the Sisters of Mercy and Mission UK. The deep vocals, hard guitars, and swirling synths over an electronic beat have already infected dance floors and radio world-wide. Their emotionally powerful ballads can bring the listeners to tears.
Formed in 1996 and surviving many lineup changes, Redemption is driven by the vision of front man and guitarist Miah. Joined by Ashe on guitar and Jesse on bass, the trio is poised to lead the Goth Rock revival."

4.13.07 PROJEKTFEST 2007
Official message: "There’s gonna be a Projektfest in 2007! I’ve decided to hold our festival as a one-day event as part of the Blacksun Festival.
Let me explain my thinking. In Germany, there’s a thriving scene for festivals. There are many of us who love going to Leipzig, Germany, for the yearly WGT. It’s always a great time, meeting up with friends from around the globe, each year in the same city. You get to know the place and it gets to be like a second home.
While I am absolutely full of encouragement for the Convergence festival, the “problem” is that every year it’s in a different city with a totally new production staff. So it never feels like home. It’s always starting from scratch. America can definitely benefit from many different festivals, no doubt about that! We need a strong, active, and growing live music scene for the Gothic / Darkwave / Industrial genres.
After attending and vending at the 2006 Blacksun Festival, I realized that Jonathan and crew are creating what I envisioned: a city-based genre-focused festival, that grows every year. I’ve been itching to do another Projektfest (the last one was in 2002, before that: 1998, 1997 + 1996), and this seemed a perfect opportunity to put it together. I haven’t done a festival since ‘02 because I’ve really got a lot on my plate here; running Projekt (in the next six months we have a steady stream of new releases via our new distributor RYKO), working on new black tape for a blue girl material, and being a single dad half the week... I didn’t think organizing a festival on top of all that would be possible.
I am very excited about staging the 2007 Projektfest as a part of the Blacksun Festival because it’s a good way to work with a festival I believe in, help boost the scene, and put on a great show without as much pressure of the Projekt staff. The Blacksun Festival already has the infrastructure, so things will flow smoothly for everyone.
Putting our festivals together is going to make something big and amazing for 2007. I hope to meet you there. I remember a great place for falaffels, from last year.
Projektfest'07 will be held at Alchemy, in New Haven CT, on Saturday afternoon August 11, featuring four Projekt artists including Black Tape For A Blue Girl (the other bands will be announced shortly). Voltaire (with full band) will perform Saturday evening on the main stage at Toad's Place. By purchasing a ticket to the Blacksun Festival, you are also getting your ticket to Projektfest’07." - Sam
The tickets are price-tiered:
Through April 30 : $69
May 1 - July 1 : $79
July 2 - July 31 : $89

4.12.07 POST KAPITAL
Alternative / New Wave / Rock
Official description: "Beginning in January of 2006, Post Kapital came to be when Austin Peter and Andres Gomez, of Veritas, came together with Nicole Baumgartner (Your Despondent Smile), for their first gig at the Grist Mill Cafe.
Influenced by the Post Punk and New Wave movement of the early 1980's, Post Kapital brings their own sound of electronic-indie rock to the table. The drumming of Austin Peter is reminiscent of Joy Division, which adds a fast pace and danceable beat. He also adds electronic rhythms and pads to give the music an electronic edge. Andres Gomez's simple yet distinct guitar riffs add everything from an eerie sound to a funk vibe, while his vocals complement, not overpower the music. Nicole Baumgartner comes in with synthesizer lines that give the songs a more full and intense sound that helps to give the group its style."
We are sooo digging PK's tunes! On their song, 'Conviction' you can hear just a little Xymox and Love & Rockets influence, and on 'Be Your Boy' you hear a little New Order. 'Lies' has a pinch of old Killing Joke and 'New Obsession' is well, just another contagious song!

4.10.07 DIAMANDA GALAS SETS THINGS STRAIGHT
Official message: "The following is a letter that Diamanda (Galás) would like to share with her fans, in both English and Spanish. It was also mailed to the Governor of the State of Zacatecas, Amalia D. Garcia Medina." - Charlie @ ISO
Official letter:
"I would like to say “I’m sorry” to all of you who waited nearly ninety minutes for my concert on April 1st. Unfortunately, the festival was not prepared technically with the equipment that I needed to make a professional appearance. Thus, it was necessary for the theater staff to help me during the three hours before the concert. They had to drive and pick up the right equipment for the concert, which was lacking. I had to stay at the theater for ten hours before the show, instead of returning to the hotel to rest, in order to work with the team to prepare the concert. The final sound-check began at 7PM."
Ken Hypes, (Diamanda’s sound engineer):
"We had to delay the show until 9PM because we did not have a working sound system until 6PM. Even after this was accomplished and Diamanda did the final sound test, the festival, without my permission, decided to make an announcement. During the setup of the announcement, they found the microphone cable was not in working condition. When I arrived at the console, the house sound man was unplugging our “front of house” cables to get a good cable for the announcement microphone. He then put the bad cable into the “front of house” system. This caused the house-left-speaker stack to cut out by the end of the second song. There were no house sound guys around during the show, so we were unable to get it working, until the last song."
Diamanda:
"In other words, in order to protect their own political interests, they further sabotaged the concert.
This kind of political crap is repulsive, especially in the administrative branch of Zacatecas, who prides itself as being so politically conscious. It is also to be expected by those who value that image over personal responsibility. To add insult to injury, I received a token award from the mayor, after the concert, thanking me for bringing culture to Zacatecas. I don't respond well to disingenuous compliments. Zacatecas is in no need of cultural elevation, merely administrative improvement.
Unfortunately, the festival found the need to make two idiotic speeches before the concert to attempt to cover their failings. As someone who speaks several languages, I know precisely what it means when a festival does this. Generally, they say something akin to, “The artist had a skiing accident, so he will be onstage a half hour late, etc.” Ken tried to prevent the second speech and a man working for the festival grabbed his hand from the mute button and pushed him away from the mixing console. At this time, the cables he connected for the fifth and final sound-check were replaced with other cables for the speeches, unbeknownst to him, and this destroyed the loudspeaker connection—the right stack did not function, and the left went in and out; it was therefore necessary for him to re-equalize and boost the monitor system for the audience to hear the concert at all.
There were 900 people in attendance.
What the festival did not count on is that I had my written own speech, which I delivered in Spanish, after entering the stage. This was so that the audience (who was told the show began at 7:30, we were told 8:30 until the day of the show) would hear the truth: that they were kept waiting for 90 minutes, not a half hour. Even the newspaper, as you can see, did not know the truth, since they were also lied to by the festival—who had misinformed the entire crew of the theatre.
This behavior is unacceptable. Because my team was mistreated, I prompted a request for full apology to be printed in the newspapers of Zacatecas, by the 3rd of April. As anticipated, this did not happen. Anyone attending the concert should address complaints to the festival directly. Telephone: (52-492-922-2184)
This is the first time I’ve seen such ridiculous behavior on behalf of a festival. I have seen it (rarely) on one-off concerts and have cancelled, but in such a case as this, where so many people had traveled twelve hours or more from all over Mexico on buses just to see me, I did not wish to cancel whatever I could sing for them. Even with an unpredictable sound system.
The most important thing that I’d like to say is regarding the people of Zacatecas. In just three days I discovered a citizenry with great profundity, heart and humor that made me very happy. In particular I had a great time with Francisco and Ruben, who let me use the kitchen of the hotel Jobito to warm up my voice. Ruben even took it well when I threatened his life with the kitchen machete to the tune of “Adios, Suavecito!” And Francisco read me the great poetry of the region. We had a great time with the whole staff of the Jobito. And the corridos. Yes, baby—bring them on all day from the bar. I was happy.
This concert was for the Zacatecanos and my friends that came from many parts of Mexico. To the festival: I do not forgive you. I would have if you had printed your apology in the papers, as you promised, before I left. But I am, of course, not surprised.
I think it would be a good idea for the festival to hire my current sound engineer, Ken Hypes and Milton Nascimiento ‘s sound man, Sergio (who has done sound for me in Mexico City) to troubleshoot next year’s festival, so that local artists aren’t insulted whilst bringing culture to their own city and international artists aren’t treated poorly as guests. Thank you." - Diamanda Galás

4.10.07 AMEN FORCED TO CANCEL UK TOUR
Punk / Black Metal / Hardcore
Official bulletin: "This is a very hard and thankless task but we have to say again that the
Amen Camp has been blighted by misfortune. It is against stiff and hardened
protest from Casey that we have had to make a decision to again postpone
Casey's forthcoming UK TOUR.
The tour which was due to commence on the 27th
April has been postponed due to an unforeseen but potentially dangerous
situation. Casey has been subject to a severe Pneumonia illness which is
called 'walking pneumonia'. The problem is created by a severe strain on the
bodies system allowing fluid to enter the lungs. It was following an intense
session with his local Doctor that Casey had to be referred to the local
Hospital. Though Casey has since lapsed into a state of convalescence, it was
the considered opinion of not only his Doctor but also the Hospital that any
form of physical stress would prove to be extremely harming."

4.10.07 DEER TICK
Rock / Country / Americana
Partial official description: "Deer Tick is the songwriting project or band (depending on how you look at it) of John McCauley. Thanks to the help of dear friend, near brother, Brendon "Viking Moses" Massei, Deer Tick has been ferociously zig-zagging across the United States, hitting all the sparsely attended basement shows, smokey bars, upscale joints, small to medium size festivals, and everything in between, since April of 2005."
Deer Tick has some great tunes! We especially like their songs, 'Standing at the Threshold', 'Art Isn't Real', and 'Baltimore Blues No. 1'. They're currently on a major tour and will likely coming to a town near you soon. They'll be hitting Wisconsin this July.
Official statement: "May - 'War Elephant' comes out. Full length album of hi-fi Deer Tick. Plus new t-shirts, the classic Calvin peeing on "Deer Tick" and a new one, an altered Dead Kennedys logo that now reads "DT"." - John

4.4.07 THE FLESHTONES IN PRINT
Garage / Pop
Coming sometime this Fall:
"One of the non-33 1/3 music books we'll be publishing in 2007 is Sweat by Joe Bonomo - an absolutely wonderful 400 page biography of The Fleshtones.
Sweat is an affectionate, gritty, and improbably moving, chronicle of three decades of near hits, near misses, drink, drugs, fallings in, fallings out, endless touring, misses, rebirths, and more misses.
In the words of Nick Tosches, "Joe Bonomo has written a fine book: a book not only about a band or times passed, but also about the rare virtue of endurance." " - 33 1/3

4.4.07 WOLF & CUB
Official message: "Wolf & Cub's darkly psychedelic and intensely rhythmic debut album 'Vessels' is out now.
The band have spent most of 2007 on the road - and anyone who has caught them in Japan, Europe, America or their native Australia over the last few months will testify to their live impact. Propelled by twin drummers and grounded by thundering basslines, Wolf & Cub's music is a ceaseless surge of forward momentum, laced and defaced by Joel Byrne's saturated, ultra-sustained guitar tones and keening vocals.
And whereas many studio recordings somehow fail to measure up to the live experience, Vessels is a dense, adrenalised triumph. The record draws on the feral energy of early singles like 'Thousand Cuts' and 'Steal Their Gold', honing a wealth of ideas into one focussed blast. And it covers plenty of ground, too - from the relentless drive of title track and opener 'Vessels' to the hazy, rhythmic psychedelia of 'Kingdom', taking in the narcotic garage energy of 'This Mess' and the glam stomp of 'March of Clouds' along the way. Muscular punk basslines intertwine with prog-psych guitar fuzz, while the percussion switches deftly between pounding ferocity and hypnotic detail; in short, this is an album built on a deep love of exhilarating, mind-bending music." - 4AD

4.3.07 OUR BABBLE
Went to Chicago for a couple of days for work so no chance to work on the magazine. Am trying to catch up now; sorry!
I HAVE to vent about the straws from the Subway sandwich chains. Unless I use several teeth, it takes me like 10 minutes to open the plastic wrap around their flippin' straws. I've been dealing with these rebellious suckers for years and I guess my only alternative is to buy a box of unwrapped straws. I've had it!
I honestly don't even know what to say about what I have heard in regards to the documentary 'Zoo' that competed at the Sundance Festival. I am completely stunned and thoroughly disgusted. I certainly don't want to know about the life of a man who had a "fatal sexual encounter with a horse." What the f* is wrong with people and why would that kind of film make it into Sundance? When does art stop being art? I don't know, it's a fine line I guess.
Watch for a future interview with Justin Sullivan of New Model Army.
4.2.07 LIFEINJERSEY
Rock / Alternative / Indie
Partial official description: "With a name having nothing to do with location, LifeInJersey formed in the fall of 2005 with aspirations of bringing their edgy/melodic sound to the masses. With rich vocals, screaming guitars, a pulse-pounding rhythm section, and a powerful stage show, LifeInJersey's style is unique and their music: hard to forget."
We love their songs 'Skeletons' and 'The Grey'! Watch for their upcoming EP, 'Skeletons', out May 26th.
